Re: The Gideon's
Namaker all,
i must be staying at hotels for the wrong reasons but i've never found myself with much occassion to open random drawers or, for that matter, read whilst i'm there.
it would be interesting to have some more relevant topical information available in every room, like Time or something like that but i still don't see myself having much time or reason to be reading in the hotel room.
on the off chance that i would be interested in reading... i bring my own books
metta,
~v

seriously didn't mean to go here but for you nonreligious or antireligious types that is part of what religion is about to me...a realization that crying in your pretzels or drowning your sorrows in alcohol doesn't solve anything. Folks utilze the tennents and postulates of religion to move beyond...not all folks, but some folks.

Re: The Gideon's
for me, I like finding a bible in the hotel room... I even sometimes read it... you know, there u are in the hotel, and woo- there, hiding in the drawer, is God...
I would also like to see Buddhism do the same- leave a copy of an intro to buddhism text in the same drawer, maybe add a bhagavad gita and a copy of the Koran too... why not?

Re: The Gideon's
Never have been :/ The only time I was close to that was back in my JW's days... But I was never fully in it as you're probally aware :P
Even if I was... Jesus ain't in that book.... It speaks of him but, he ain't in it

Re: The Gideon's
S'all good. Jesus if stories are even slightly accurate (I mean excluding all the miracles and pa-pas with god and so on) If accurate and true then he was a person of great intention.... But no salvation.
And what I meant about him not being in the book.. If there is a god he surrounds, he's not in a book. You know?

Re: The Gideon's
If the Buddhists or the Taoists or the Muslims or whatever started such an organization to deliver books to every hotel room...I'm sure they'd be accepted by many, most, if not all. I'd surely like it.
The Gideons started when couple of traveling salesman met and were discussing faith while on the road and thought it would have been handy to have a bible as reference, and it would be handy for travelors to have access...the idea was born, or so the story goes...
I love staying at B&Bs where they have bookshelves, or libraries, and you can sit and read all sorts... Now that would be the ticket at a hotel...forget the pay per view movies and games and porn, add a lending library to the lobby...make hotel lobbies receiving stations for used unwanted books...and anyone can pick up or leave a book....(another idea born??)
G!d is in the bible, Moses is in the bible...as is Jesus, and Abraham, and Joseph and .... tis reading and contemplating that allows them out of the pages and into your heart.

Re: The Gideon's
Just a book?? Heresy!!
Now I am not referencing the bible....but there is no such thing as 'just a book'.
you movie buff of all people...movies only wish they could be as good as books.

Re: The Gideon's
Not going to argue that, I am too lazy, impatient and pretty much border-line illiterate... Books are no good to me, maybe I have distain for books, cause I wish I had what it takes to read um? *shrugs* who knows... But, if there is a god, surely he is always in your heart, book or no book. I'd say the bible would be a beginners guide/reference book if the christian god is for reals.
