Lip service of no substance. My middle finger remains the only digit he's getting from me.

PM, I agree that Obama is getting off to a great start in the Middle East as well. But I am not sure that we share the same reasons for this belief.

Given the 25+ pages of recent homophobic discussion, which in my view was not exactly compassionate to a minority group, I think it might be interesting to hear your views on the Palestine / Israel conflict.

Would you like to share them ?

Re: Thumbs up to Olbama

I dont treat any minority any different from the other that includes homosexuals. Saying sexual orientation is partly due to social and pyshoclogical factors is something that is accpeted by many professionals. And there is nothing wrong with providing a service at peoples discretion. This is the view i've always had, much of the 25+ pages were due to people not understanding my point.

And as for the Palestian Isreali conflict Id rather not talk too much about this issue as it can end up being another long thread. I have nothing against Isrealis, Jews, Palestinians or Muslims.

Ok, that is fine, but I don't think the problem with the homophobe thread was its length, it was what was being said.

Anyway, returning to the topic of the tread that you posted in the OP, as I mentioned, I am also quite optimistic about Obama's start in the Middle East.

I think his appointment of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State was a great appointment ! Her experience and disposition are a good fit for this position. She has compassion for both sides in the Palestine / Israel conflict so I am hopeful that she will promote some positive change.

I am glad to see that Obama is going to make a speech in Cairo, this will be watched closely. Because of his African roots he his being given a chance by the Arab countries in a way that we have not seen in modern times. I also like his appointment of Rahm Emanual as an advisor. I think Rahm is very intelligent and will provide good counsel.

The problems in Palestine / Israel are old ones and will not be easily solved. They will take real world vision and leadership. I am hoping that Obama can rise to the challenge.

You're more optimistic than I, Avi. As I grow older, I grow less confident that humankind will solve these problems anytime soon. Peace is the path we know we should take, but suspicion, hatred and vengeance have the upper hand.

Check back in another 500 years and things may finally have worked themselves out. But lasting peace ain't happening in our lifetimes.

Just MHO.

I too am hopeful. The Palestinians and Isrealis are both amazing people and its ashame that they have to encounter war. Its ashame that any human has to encounter war.

Re: Thumbs up to Olbama

I hope that the 700'000 odd displaced Palestinians may one day return to their homeland.

I've seen the effects of being a refugee first hand. I have many friends who are refugees not the kind of refugees you would image though, they managed to pick up their lives again, many doing well in the diaspora. It was only 35 years ago that 165,000 Greek Cypriots were kicked out of their homes in the North of Cyprus by Turkish troops.

My life long doctor is a Palestinian here in Cyprus. Very smart people.
