how true. When I go to the movies I want to be sucked in completely...when they blow a scene and I am taken back into the theatre watching the screen it is over.
I remember sitting through a highly acclaimed Oscar winning production...can't even fathom the name right now. Some English school..some important footrace..it was all full of this soupy drama for me...but I sat through it, waiting to be amazed somehow...and then at this race he gets this note...and holds it in his hand...long shot the note...close up no note...long shot the note...close up no note... I sat through it...it was awful made worse.
Another one...some clancy/harrison ford thing....I think...they started out in Annapolis at the Naval Academy and then headed out of town...onto the freeway...unfortunately Annapolis has no freeways or buildings that large...movie over.

1) Chariots of Fire? - It's been a awhile since I'd seen that, so I dunno if that's the one.
2) Patriot Games, I believe.
One thing that ruins it for me is older movies that have a shot of the WTC. Kinda snaps me back into reality and I can't concentrate on the movie after that.

I think you hit them both right on the mark.
As for last contemplation...I guess that too will be generational/local thing. I mean the folks that lived around Chernobyl, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Bagdad...(too many to mention) all see pictures of buildings/cities which no longer exist yet they have fond memories of...

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?
Why would you have fond memories of the WTC's? They were just trading buidlings. Not like it was disney land or something...

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?
The WTC center was such a national landmark, highly distinguishable in the Manhatten skyline, visible along with the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. It was a symbol of captialism and strong domestic economy. It became a backdrop in many movies. Recall when they remade that cheesy version of King Kong back in the 70's, that they replaced the ESB for the WTC towers.
I read an early script for Spiderman from back when they were in the production phase, that they were going to use the WTC for one of the battles between Spidey and one of his foes, but for some reason they scrapped the idea for some reason, even before 9/11. I don't think the movie would have faired as good had they kept it in.

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?
I believe they actually had to go back into production...I saw the movie Christmas Eve...it wasn't at the theatres yet...a cgi guy had the original (with the towers) and the second one without it...he was editing the towers out of footage they didn't reshoot.
my recollection...

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?
Actually, IMDb says that the towers were in a trailer:
Quote:
|
The original trailer for the movie depicted a theft of a bank, with the robbers making a getaway in a helicopter. A close-up of the helicopter was shown, until the helicopter stopped, apparently caught in mid-air. As the camera zoomed out, it was shown that the helicopter was caught in a spider web, suspended between the two towers of the World Trade Center. After the attacks on the towers 11 September 2001, however, the trailer was changed.
|
But:

|
The World Trade Center Towers can be seen in the background of some scenes and once in the reflection of Spider-Man's eye. The makers of the film chose not to remove them digitally.

Source: IMDb
Now I'm going to have to go back and watch it again.

Great film-- Hemp Revolution is a documentary that showcases the wonders of the hemp plant (hey, it's not just for stoners anymore!) and goes into some detail about corporate scheming to keep it under wraps.

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?
Black Widows, a documentary about the female terrorist organization in Chechnya. There was an interview with the only member who survived her "job" (the bomb she had with her didn't go off when she pressed the detonating button.)
I also saw a movie I don't recall the title of but it was about human trafficking in Bosnia (don't you just "love" hearing about the movies the professors show in my classes? )

Becoming Jane.
Nice period drama about a young Jane Austen, prior to writing Pride and Prejudice.
