The kingdom of "Judah" contained two tribes, Judah and Benjamin, and part of Levi (scattered among cities in both south and north), and also the old tribe of Simeon, which had gotten completely absorbed into Judah, which is why the large Joseph tribe was divided into Manasseh and Ephraim to keep the list at 12. The north kingdom is therefore referred to as having "ten" tribes (Manasseh, Ephraim, part of Levi, plus Zebulon, Naphtali, Issachar, Dan, and the minor tribes Asher, Gad, Reuben).
"Levi" still retains its separate identity, as does the "Cohen" clan within "Levi" (the descendants of Aaron, eligible for priesthood back in the Temple days).
