Re: why Mary?
Why would God pick a woman whose name means "rebellion" [according to this lexicon]?
Miriam = "rebellion" 4813 Miryam meer-yawm' from 4805; rebelliously; Mirjam, the name of two Israelitesses:--Miriam. 4805 mriy mer-ee' from 4784; bitterness, i.e. (figuratively) rebellion; concretely, bitter, or rebellious:--bitter, (most) rebel(-lion, -lious). 1) elder sister of Moses and Aaro n 2) a woman of Judah

Above all else, we could say that Mary was pure of heart ... and of body, and of mind. Not all would agree with the notion of a virgin birth, but I think it is immaterial.
Only by being born into a family where the greatest qualities of character would be nourished and drawn forth ... could Jesus of Nazareth receive the preparation he needed for his Mission on earth.
Peace, andrew

Re: why Mary?
Because of her receptivity, her humility, cause she was a servant of god and she understood her religion.

I would say that Jesus is my role model. Mary.. even though she gave birth to Christ was still imperfect as all of us of the flesh are. We honor her.. We respect her but she is not above us or better than us.

Re: why Mary?
Hi--Peace to Everyone Here--
I, like Faithfulservant, consider Jesus my role model, first and foremost. I also admire the faith and servitude of His followers, both men and women. And I admire Mary because God called upon her to walk in faith in order to do His will. I admire the Spirit that came to live in her and through her in more ways than one. I admire her quiet courage.
Why not think of her as a role model when it comes to raising children and even being a mom after they grow up and we witness their suffering and their triumphs and pray and pray for them and suffer too --after all, don't you know that every step of the way, she relied on the guidance of the Father to do so? Not a bad idea. One to "ponder in the heart", so to speak...
InPeace,
InLove

Re: why Mary?
Well, we don't really know much about what Mary did as she was raising Jesus so I'm not sure how she could be a specific role model to us in that way. But, in her faith, trust and humility I would say that she would be a role model to all Christians, women and men.

Re: why Mary?
i think Mary is a good role model for the way she backed her son even as he was older. i think of the time they needed wine at the wedding & Jesus called her woman but somehow she understood that. & all she instructed the others at that point was to do whatever Jesus asks you to do.
& so she kept all these things in her heart.
I think God knew he would be able trust her with Jesus through his entire life & she would have the courage & understanding, even when it was time to let go.
I guess the best part of it all is Mary was there at the day of pentecost when God sent the gift of the Holy Ghost & that was the promise Jesus gave to them all because he knew he had to leave so he could send back the Comforter to his mom & to all who believe.
what do you think about all of this Mrs.Alhajjri?

Re: why Mary?
Although I already have a female role model I believe Mary is a great role model too because she is infallible, a symbol of purity and decency and is definitely above us.
As a mother I need to tell my daughter everything I know about Mary because I want her to love Mary so much and think of her as a role model and when she does, she will do her best to be like Mary who was a very honorable woman. She remained a virgin and did not do anything to corrupt her image in God's eyes. Her behavior towards people was ideal. She never hurt anyone or broke his/her heart.
When my daughter learns all these things she will not be influenced by destructive ideas and when she becomes a teenager she will not think of a singer or an actress as a role model and will not imitate them. She will compare between them and Mary and of course she will find out that Mary tops all women because of her unique character. There will be no place for nonsense in her heart because the love of God, Jesus and Mary has taken all places.
I think that is what every mother must do if she wants her daughter to live a clean life.

The most important thing is that Mary took a chance, and said "yes" to God. That certainly did not mean that by being Godly, she would have a quiet and dull life, now did it? Pretty exciting, scary, heart wrentching and ultimately fulfilling...wouldn't you think?
