Thumbs up World peace and the International Court:

United Nations Day is just around the corner on October 24th and what more fitting a way to celebrate than to acknowledge the actual lessening of world conflicts and the International Court of Justice!

Since the end of the Cold War armed conflicts have lessened:

"Since the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, there has been a "major decline" in armed conflicts, genocides, human rights abuses, military coups, and international crises, according to the study, "Human Security Report 2005," which was presented here Monday.

In spite of the many news reports of terrorism that we hear about... From an historical standpoint there has been a signifcant drop in conflicts worldwide.

I think this is a significant indication of evidnece of the lesser peace. We also have today and quite recently the International Court of Arbitration:

Moved to Politics.

And you're right, a very important point to underline is how relatively safer we are locally compared to the longer view of history.

However, the ICJ has a long way to go yet - I believe the USA has refused to sign up to it, and as the USA is usually held up to the the word's peacekeeper, it seems the remit of the ICJ will be somewhat muted while this continues.

Re: World peace and the International Court:

I think there is a reason the US lets NATO and others recommend people be tried at the IC...and why we recommended that Sadam be tried by Iraqi court and not IC....if we agreed Bush or some other president, congressmen or general would have thier neck on the line....

Do as we say, not as we do...

namaste,

My understanding is that while it's true the United States does not formally recognize the International Court of Justice, it nonetheless is party to a number of the issues and has representation there...so in a defacto sense it is involved as a litigant and has had it's interests represented in the ICJ.
