John Lennon was fan of Christ

by David Masters

A long lost radio interview with John Lennon, in which he calls himself ‘one of Christ’s biggest fans’, is to be broadcast by the BBC.

The 1969 interview, with Ken Seymour from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, will be broadcast for the first time this week on BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Programme.

Lennon says during the interview: ‘if I can turn the focus on the Beatles on to Christ’s message, then that’s what we’re here to do’.

This represents a stark contrast to Lennon’s oft quoted line that the Beatles were ‘bigger than Jesus’.

In the interview, Lennon explains that when he said this he was referring to the Beatle’s influence over the youth of the day, in contrast with Christ’s influence.

Elsewhere in the interview Lennon professes his strong belief in the power of prayer.

Lennon admits, however, that he gave up on the institutional church when he was 14 after being thrown out of a service for laughing.
