British missionaries jailed in Gambia

by David Masters

Two British missionaries arrested and charged with sedition in Gambia are due to make a court appearance.

David Fulton, 60, from Ayrshire, Scotland, and his 46-year-old wife Fiona, from Devon, were arrested in the African country two weeks ago on the accusation that they sought to undermine the Gambian government.

Mr Fulton had been working as a chaplain in the Gambian army.

In the past the couple has been attacked on three separate occasions for preaching their beliefs in the streets of the Muslim majority country.

The couple, held in separate high security prisons, have been offered bail at £125,000 each.

Conditions of bail would include surrendering their travel documents to the local magistrate court.
