Bring your guns to church

by Benjamin Graham

A church service celebrating the right the bear arms was held this week in Kentucky.

Pastor Ken Pagano told his congregation to bring their unloaded guns to New Bethel Church in Louisville for the special service.

Pagano organised the service after church members expressed concern that Obama could seek to restrict firearms ownership.

“Responsible handgun owners” were invited to wear their firearms inside the church to promote safe gun ownership and to endorse the right to bear arms.

“We’re doing this just like if we were having a church picnic,” Pagano said.

“We want to send a message that there are legal, civil, law-abiding intelligent people who also own guns.

“There is nothing to be afraid of from a legal firearms owner.”

Pagano believes the right to bear arms is central to American identity.

“If it were not for a deep-seated belief in the right to bear arms, this country would not be here today,” he said.

A handgun raffle was held at the service, and information on firearms safety was given out to gun owners.

On the other side of Louisville a coalition of church groups and campaigners held a gun-free service.

Terry Taylor, who organised the alternative event, said he finds the idea of bringing guns into a sacred space “deeply troubling”.
