Priest confesses to being a dad

by Sara Levy

A Catholic priest admitted to his Greater Manchester congregation that he has a four-year-old son before announcing his resignation from the Church.

Father Peter McDonough confessed to breaking his vows of chastity during a sign-language mass for the deaf at St Joseph’s Mission to Deaf People, in Collyhurst, this Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Salford said Fr McDonough, who is deaf himself, made the decision “following much reflection and many conversations”.

“It was with great sadness that the deaf community and the whole Catholic community in Collyhurst learnt of Father Peter’s decision on Sunday,” said Vicar General Mark Davies.

Fr McDonough has ministered to deaf people in Manchester for the past 27 years.

“The outstanding work of St. Joseph’s Mission to Deaf People to which Father Peter dedicated so many years of his priestly life will continue to be fully supported by the Salford Diocese,” Davies added.

A priest has been appointed to take over Fr McDonough’s role. Fr Frank Parkinson will start work at St Joseph’s in September.
