Dalai Lama confesses ignorance over Tiger Woods

by Sara Levy

The Dalai Lama has confessed that he has no idea who Tiger Woods is.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader admitted to not knowing of the world’s most famous golfer after Woods apologised for repeatedly cheating on his wife and said he was planning to re-embrace Buddhism, the faith he practised as a child.

Speaking in Los Angeles, the Dalai Lama labelled his own lack of knowledge about any sports a “disgrace”.

Asked to comment on Woods’s infidelity, he said: “I think mainly whether you call it Buddhism or another religion, self-discipline, that’s important. Self-discipline with awareness of consequences.

“Buddhism teaches that a craving for things outside ourselves causes an unhappy and pointless search for security. It teaches me to stop following every impulse.”

In a carefully worded apology last week, Woods said he had “lost track” of his Buddhist faith in recent years.

“I have a lot of work to do and intend to dedicate myself to doing it,” he said.

“Part of this is Buddhism. Buddhism teaches me to stop following every impulse and to know restraint.

“Obviously I lost track of what I was taught.”
