Lutherans appoint Palestinian as president

by Sara Levy

A Palestinian Bishop has been elected president of the World Lutheran Federation.

Bishop Munib A. Younan, known for his campaigning on peace, justice and interfaith issues, becomes the first Arab to lead the Geneva-based church body, which oversees 70 million Lutherans around the world.

Younan said he was introduced to the WLF as a refugee at the Martin Luther School in Jerusalem.

He used his appointment as an opportunity to call for increased dialogue between Christians and people of other faiths.

“It is essential that I as an Arab Christian can be used by other Christians for dialogue with people of other faiths so that we can have dialogue that can be for the benefit of all people,” he said.
