Belfast Islamic Centre to build extension

by Benjamin Graham

Belfast Islamic Centre has submitted plans for a £500,000 expansion.

If approved by the Planning Service, the plans will see a three storey extension built at the Wellington Park premises.

The centre is a converted house, and has been used by Muslims in Belfast for the last 20 years.

The space has become increasingly cramped with the recent rise in the number of Muslims living in Northern Ireland.

Currently around 300 worshippers attend Friday prayers at the centre.

The extension would increase the size of the building by 530 square metres.

A fundraising drive is currently underway to pay for the proposed expansion.
