Lingerie displays banned in Gaza

by Benjamin Graham

Clothes shops in the Gaza strip have been banned from using scantily clad mannequins in their window displays.

Shop owners who flout the ban will face a fine.

Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, said the new legislation is not intended to Islamise Palestinian society, but to restore “public morality”.

Dressing rooms and tinted windows in women’s clothes shops have also been banned.

“It is forbidden to display revealing clothes in front of the shops,” a statement from Hamas said.

A police spokesperson for Hamas said the edict was announced in response to “complaints and pressures by ordinary people”.
