Shi’ite worshippers killed by suicide bomber in Lahore

by Jan Harris

A 13-year old boy detonated explosives at a Shi’ite Muslic procession in Lahore on Tuesday, killing himself and 13 others, including three police officers.

It is believed that over 50 people were injured in the suicide attack which took place when police tried to check the attacker at a cordon.

Reports suggest that he was riding a motorbike, which collided with a police vehicle.

The rally was being held to mark the end of the holy month of Muharram.

Terrorist group Fidayeen-e-Islam militant, part of the Taliban, telephoned news agency Reuters to claim responsibility for the attack.

It was announced last week that Qari Hussain Mehsud, a commander of Fidayeen-e-Islam, is being targeted by the United States.

Mehsud is believed to be heavily involved with the recruitment of Pakistani children as suicide bombers.

In January 2008 the Pakistan army discovered a ‘school’ for suicide bombers in South Waziristan which was believed to have been run by Mehsud.
