BBC presenter claims God had a wife

by Jan Harris

BBC2’s new three-part series, The Bible’s Buried Secrets, is to be presented by an atheist who believes God had a wife – a fertility goddess named Asherah.

Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou also believes that depicting Eve as a troublesome wife does her an injustice and claims that Eve was not the first woman as the story of the Garden of Eden should not be in Genesis.

While Dr Stavrakopoulou seems a contentious choice to present the new series, especially considering recent criticisms of the BBC’s religious programming, her credentials are impeccable.

She is a senior lecturer in the Hebrew Bible at the University of Exeter and holds a doctorate in theology from Oxford University.

In the series she travels to major archaeological sites and considers how recent discoveries are changing our understanding of the Bible.

Her visits include Khirbet Qeiyafa, a fortified city in Judah from the time of King David, and the ancient city of Ugarit in Syria.
