Stoning spreads to Ukrain

by Jan Harris

Reports that a 19-year old Ukrainian Muslim woman has been stoned to death have raised concern that the barbaric practice is spreading geographically.

The woman, Katya Koren, was allegedly killed by three youths who justified their actions by saying she deserved the death sentence under the Muslim Sharia law because she took part in a beauty contest.

The girl, from the Republic of Crimea in the Ukraine, was buried in a forest and her body was not discovered until a week after she disappeared.

A 16-year-old boy, Bihal Gaziev, has been arrested by police for allegedly killing Koren.

He told police that he did not regret her death because she had
‘violated the laws of Sharia’.

Death sentences by stoning have recently been reported in Iran, Nigeria and Pakistan.

In Iran adultery is the only crime which carries the penalty of stoning under Sharia law, although murder, rape, armed robbery, and drug trafficking are all punishable by death.
