I have not ever read Plato(don't tell anyone :>)), however the last sentence demonstrates that no particular culture owns knowledge and there are many roads to 'getting there'.

I think the writer was saying that gaining more knowledge(of the world) increases awareness of bad things. While this can be true, the joy of increased knowledge out weighs the bad things. The writer's view is pessimistic, imo.

That's from Ecclesiates 1:16 & 17 The writer's meaning is supplied in the verse following 18. For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge, increases pain.
