Parents no right to know what children are doing

Very, very well said. The thing is, if some kind of law is passed requiring doctors to inform parents of a young woman's choice to have an abortion, there are girls who will wind up dying for it. Either they'll be so afraid of telling their parents that they're pregnant (or a parent/guardian...

Yup, it is. Ah, well. I'll just use Safari for the time being. Definitely weird, though.

    Paragraphs In Posts

Okay, it works just peachy in Safari (which I'm using now), so it must be an issue related to Firefox. Not sure what would be causing it, as this is the first time I've ever experienced the problem, and I post on a fair number of other boards. Maybe it's time to upgrade or something.

Firefox 1.0.6 on Mac OS 10.3.9. Maybe I'll try it on Safari and see if that works any better, though it would be a bit annoying to have to open a new browser every time I want to post here. Weird.

Is Free Speech in Europe confused?

From Wikipedia, this seems to be the crux of the issue: If that's the case, then I'm inclined to stand by the Austrians' ruling- if he's being tried and jailed on charges related to illegally entering the country (knowingly at that), then sorry, but he made that bed, and now he can lie in it...

    Paragraphs In Posts

At the risk of sounding stupid, how do you enable separate paragraphs in posts? It seems that this board software doesn't recognize just hitting the return key a couple times to separate paragraphs or even get a line break; I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong, so how do I keep my posts from...

Is Free Speech in Europe confused?

I do think that it's been exaggerated as the story made the rounds- I was hearing from people that this guy got ten years, when in fact he got three. Not that I feel it's acceptable to jail someone for three years based on the denial of the Holocaust. While I agree with those in the article that...

    The Iraqi Revolutionary War

It's not. There are statements from people in Bush's administration that corroborate everything I said there. Do some reading- type "Haliburton Iraq contract" into Google and see what comes up- Haliburton, the company that gave Cheney quite the golden parachute when he left, received a no-bid...

    The Iraqi Revolutionary War

They don't have any oil or other useful resources that make it worth going in there and getting thousands of people killed in attempts to "spread democracy," for one thing. Are you saying that Iraq wasn't invaded because it was in our own interests? Bush entered office telling his people to...

So how about these cartoons then, eh?

Okay, here's a few links I just found: Accuracy of 'The Patriot' History and the Movies Analyses of Individual Scenes

So how about these cartoons then, eh?

Yeah, I think the numbers are around 30% for each party? The "base" for each generally hovers around there, and then the other 40% are considered "swing votes." Some of those people may or may not be registered with one party or another. No, it really wasn't. I mean, I love the movie, and Mel...

    The Iraqi Revolutionary War

Tactically, there's not much difference, since we're falling for the same kind of thing that ruined the British during the American Revolution (and the Roman military in its decline and fall, incidentally). Forces spread too thin over multiple military fronts, lack of unity and support for the...

So how about these cartoons then, eh?

Yes, but look at what happened because the bulk of the other 94% didn't bother to stand up or offer more than some token resistance. A world war, 2/3 of the world's Jewish population systematically murdered while everyone sat around and did next to nothing, some five million Gypsies, gays...

One Government, One Official Language, One Official Religion. Is It Possible?

I was reading a book and came across a quote that made me think of this thread, so I thought I'd post it here (pay close attention to the last paragraph): I found that a decidedly balanced view, and one that reflects many of my thoughts on the issue of science vs. religion. Some deists may...

So how about these cartoons then, eh?

I don't doubt for a second that all of this violence is being permitted/encouraged for some political reason. I don't think that Syria and Libya, both countries with poor human rights records and plenty of ability to crack right down on these protests if they felt the inclination were somehow...

So how about these cartoons then, eh?

Wow. Incredibly screwed up. These people really aren't doing much to counteract the arguments of people who say the Middle East should just be turned into a parking lot (which is something I don't believe at all, just to make that clear, but when idiots like this imam get going, attitudes like...

One Government, One Official Language, One Official Religion. Is It Possible?

And just because some anonymous dude on the internet tells me he thinks I'm stupid for believing XYZ, because he's reached certain conclusions about it, it doesn't mean he's right. You don't even know what I believe, actually, which makes this discussion sort of moot. I will say, though, that...

One Government, One Official Language, One Official Religion. Is It Possible?

Then why in the world would you need a religion at all? Frankly, it sounds like people saying, "Well, we need something to... erm... believe in and... uh... make people moral, so... yeah. World religion." I keep asking why some universal religion would be necessary in the slightest, and I don't...

One Government, One Official Language, One Official Religion. Is It Possible?

Nah, it wasn't directed at you in particular, more the general idea that first, every religion will suddenly fall into line with some big, worldwide religion (which everyone here seems to assume will be monotheistic, incidentally, and I think there are a few polytheists who wouldn't really be...

One Government, One Official Language, One Official Religion. Is It Possible?

Sorry, but speaking as someone who doesn't recognize Jesus as the Messiah, you (collective "you") would have a snowball's chance in hell of convincing me that any "official worldwide religion" espousing him as such would be a good idea. I certainly wouldn't be about to let anyone, government or...
