So how does Satan suggest things to you? Does he literally put thoughts into your head?
Naw, I think the thought is already there. He just adds weight to it.

Sort of like Guinevere and Lancelot...

The road less traveled is for a reason. It is hard to go it alone. Much easier to go along with the crowd (or the agreement and encouragement of another). Wouldn't you agree? lol

First man blamed the woman, then woman blamed the snake, for the duality to come into being through the knowledge of good and evil. Before that, everything was good, that could be consumed to extend the illusion of separateness.

Swallow that?

the bogey man, the shadowside , the bad angel on the muslim shoulder, the sin of following the lower nature, the dark side of santa [if youre not good you dont get the [material] rewards promised; a make believe counterpart to the impossibility of the perfection of striving towards your own divinity;therfore a check on that ideal proposed by the powers that be to keep us bound to that religons prescritions that have to be endlessly pereptuauted lest we succumb totally as lost souls.

well if we go back to the garden of eden he was a real good lier, and he decieved eve in a big way.
And he made that first ever lie seem real good.

He sure is an angel of light , when it comes to badness.

Jesus was ever alert to the danger of Satan’s machinations and to the fact that Satan desired to cause his destruction by getting him to entertain a thought contrary to Jehovah’s will.

This was demonstrated when Peter, on one occasion, though with good intentions, was actually throwing temptation in his way.

Jesus had spoken of the suffering and death he (Jesus)was to undergo.

“At this Peter took him aside and commenced rebuking him, saying: ‘Be kind to yourself, Lord; you will not have this destiny at all.’ But, turning his back, he said to Peter: ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you think, not God’s thoughts, but those of men.’”—Mt 16:21-23.

Throughout Jesus’ ministry he was in danger; Satan used human agents to oppose Jesus, trying either to cause him to stumble or to kill him.

At one time the people were about to seize Jesus to make him king. But he would not consider such a thing; he would accept kingship only in God’s time and way.
(Joh 6:15)

He was constantly harassed by those whom Satan used to try to trap him. (Mt 22:15)

But in all of Satan’s efforts, he failed to cause Jesus to sin in the slightest thought or deed.

After Jesus’ death and resurrection, Satan continued to wage a bitter fight against Christ’s followers.

And as in the case with Eve, Satan disguised his real nature and purposes by “transforming himself into an angel of light,” and he had agents, ministers who “also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness.” (2Co 11:14, 15)

As far as I'm concerned, Satan is more or less a literary device in the way people use him.

People have come up with all kinds of theories about what Satan is and what he was and what he does in the world and our lives today. But can anybody really be sure that what they believe about Satan when they learn about the concept in Christianity, is ultimately true?

The issue with Satan is just like the issue with Jesus and God.

Does God exist? What is he like? Some say that there probably is no God. Does Satan exist? What is he like? There is probably no Satan.

I never said there wasn't. My position is that in the event that there is no Satan, I can at least be comfortable knowing that I didn't rely on his existence for my personal spiritual well-being, nor do I rely in him not existing. Instead, my position is hypothetical. I have one policy to fit both situations.

God has always been an enigma. It was the same with Jesus and it's the same with Satan as well. God is an enigma. Jesus is an enigma. Satan is an enigma. They've all got their respective, arcane mysteries.

As I said before, Jews and Muslims don't even have the same concept of Satan and its called Shaytan and Shaitan not Satan.

The idea that you have to adopt a particular position on God, Jesus and Satan and that if you don't you're an infidel or straying from the right path is what I call legalistic theology.

From my perspective there is no essential or ultimate truth for God, Jesus or Satan. It's a matter either of practical usefulness or sentimental value. It's a question of whatever is of value to you as a person and individual.

When people argue for and promote one theology over another, most of the time they don't prove that one party or the other is right or wrong. What they instead show is that their life experiences are different.

Whether it's theology or Law one must never forget the need for pragmatism. The Law was about justice. The Gospel was about one's relationship with God. Arguing that Satan exists is like arguing about your approach to and your way of observing the Sabbath, or about the way you perform circumcisions, or whether you must observe the Five Pillars or perform the Five Daily Prayers.

There is a sense of ideological hypocrisy where Christians often accuse Judaism of being legalistic with regards to the requirements of the Law, when they themselves are legalistic about theology. These are double standards.

Do we really have to follow all these rules? Perish the thought! Theology, just like Law, is a means to an end. See the end, not the means.

Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch?" These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Colossians 2:20-22
EDIT: Oh, I thought I might add -- you ignore my advice at your own peril.:)

Excellent post, Salty (IMO). Very clear and I think, true in its observations. We can go 'round and 'round about these questions, but in the end we are like dogs chasing our own tail. We are diverted and interested, but not getting anywhere.

Jesus never went round and round with the question. What was it?

He'll tell me.

1001, 1002, 1003...

Only 1006 left to go.

1004, 1005, 1006...

no round and round here, very linear, up/down, back/forth, in/out, God/devil.

See? Told ya. I mean, told Me. oops, just shrink it... me. that better

Happy-loo-ja!

I think he can, if you want him to, just as God speaks to those who are listening-- both figuratively and literally. According to the gospels, Satan was able to "enter" the body of Judas Iscariot. We don't know much about Judas from the Bible, but anyone who would conspire to kill Jesus must have had a terribly warped sense of right and wrong.

he influences and tempts and lies. Its like the angel on one shoulder and the demon on the other. he can influence other people to do things if you arent being cooperative.

Its called spiritual warfare.

the thing is though.. if you arent saved.. he probably doesnt give you the time of day..but thats ok you will get plenty of time to know him in hell. :(

his goal is to kill that which belongs to God because he hates God and he hates what belongs to God..

If you dont belong to God.. you belong to him. The bible is very clear on that.

in addition to what Marsh said hes also going to possess the body of the Anti-Christ at the desolation of abomination midway through the great tribulation..

another thing is that he cant read minds. He is not omnipresent omniscent or ominpotent. he is not the equal of God like other people assume.. he is very powerful though and we are to be very wary of him. He wars against God but God has already won through Jesus's death and resurrection. Only Jesus is worthy to open the scroll which is believed to be the title deed to this earth. That means that the enemy lost.

hes a sore loser and wants to take as many down as he can with him because he knows hes going down. hard.

I got all the "hope that lies within" that a man can ask for.

What I don't have anymore is the desire to bash Christians over superstitious beliefs.

So anthropomorphisize God and Satan all you want. I've lost my desire to argue. Like my moms told me, "If you can't say anything nice..."

So I'm going to settle for not saying anything at all.

I think we'll both be better off for it.

yes he certainly remained faithful when he was a man on earth , love of his father JEHOVAH was really in his heart ,and at the end of the day he did come down to earth to do the will of his father , that was the whole purpose of it all . and it was done willingly:)

So let me get this straight, Mee: God's putting a physical being into a symbolic abyss?

It always was your choice.

You arent offending me by bashing my "superstitions"

I truly do believe that theres a tiny tiny part of all non-believers that questions " What if Im wrong and What if what they say is true"

So.. What if you're wrong and what we are saying is true? that there is a heaven and hell and there is a God who loves you and an enemy that hates you.

Its on you.

So dont leave... Stick around and learn some more.. ask any question you want.

:)
