BBC NEWS | UK | Sikh police want ballistic turban

Sikh police want bulletproof turbans to be developed so they can serve as firearms officers and deal with public order, a newly-formed body says.
The British Sikh Police Association says Sikh officers cannot currently do such jobs, as their religion prohibits removing turbans to wear helmets.
But the organisation's chairman says he now intends to push for more research on suitable ballistic turban material.
The Home Office said each force needed to ensure religions were accommodated.
The British Sikh Police Association, set up last month to give Sikh officers across the UK an "officially recognised voice", said it wanted its members to play a full role in the police.

I read this yesterday and smiled. I like Sikh's. There are 1000s of them around me.
Sikh's have a long tradition of the loyal and not so loyal mercenary warrior, and the Police would appeal to many.

Maybe a kevlar shell under the turban?
Maybe they should ask Mine Safety Appliance (MSA), to design and manufacture such for those that want it, just like they do the American battle helmets...

Hey, it could stop a 7.6 mm from taking off the top of one's head...

Great idea. I know the "k-pot" was a great innovation, but I really liked my ol steel pot. At least I could shave out of it in the field :)

I'm not sure the point of the thread.

Are we supposed to find it funny that people care about their safety?

Is this another opportunity to make fun of another culture?

Am I so utterly PC that it just makes you want to gag?

I thought it was kinda cool.

Actually, I like the idea of different groups looking for innovative ways they can adapt to fit into the larger culture, instead of demanding that the larger culture change to accommodate them.

Kudos to these Sikhs. :)

Well, since Sikhs aren't supposed to shave, That shouldn't be a problem. :)

Nope, no problem at all :)

Didya ever hafta wear one of those kevlar helmets? I don't know if they have changed any but the pressure on top of the head from the inner webbing was painful. I used to put a drive on rag inside it for cushioning.

lmao... Bullet proof turbans? Just aim for the face....

Congratulations AP. You've joined Nick_A as the only two people to make my Ignore List.

Nick only lasted there two weeks, but due to your utterly senseless and violent contributions to this forum I have a feeling that you'll set a new record that will be unbroken for years to come.

No, I haven't ever worn one. If I ever have to, I'll be sure to pile all my hair on top of my head before donning the helmet, instead of pulling it back behind my neck.

It is just like the jackets..... You state "I've got a bulletproof jacket!"

To me,

And I intend you harm...

I am simply going to take your knees out or arms or head... Or stab you...

If you are going to make the turban bulletproof..... You need a face guard too... And full body combat armor!!.... oh my... What is this world coming to heh.

Helmets and body armor obviously reduce the number of fatalities and injuries. It is a percentage.

Seems to me the turbans could just be made of kevlar and then wrap at will...

That is one heavy hat to wear... *shrugs*

I just never got "small" protections like that is all... You see that, you aim somewhere else...

The head is one of the last places to aim for anyways.... You go for the torso first, bigger easier target, an more vital organs to damage and cause the target to fall and be useless.. and maybe the bonus of death.. But say you got a rifle and you have miltary training and can use it... Sure go for the face.

Also in regards to the Sikhs and their issue, you want to be a firearms officer, put on a helmet.... *shrugs* Do their soldiers (where the native religion of Sikhism is) do their soldiers wear bullet proof turbans?

My understanding is Sikhs were always the armed support of Hindus, who they considered to be scared pacifists.

And no they never had bullet proof turbans...however I'd bet many a bullet hit a turban that didn't hit the head..those layers of cloth had some affect...there have got to be stories.

Of course in Vietnam and Korea and even in GW1 we didn't have v-bottom, blast resistant humvees only in GW2 did this all of a sudden become a critical factor that we weren't protection our troops properly.

Every other war they ran around in canvas topped or open jeeps and were blown to smithreens by makeshift bombs and landmines.

As time progresses the protection to the soldier progresses....of course very soon we'll be using drones and robotic soldiers to most of the dirty work...
