proverbs 12:10 says that a good person is kind to their animals while a mean person is cruel.

most factory farms are cruel to their animals. buying such meat and dairy supports cruelty. that is why it is wrong to BUY said meat. however, if you need the nutrients and can't afford better meat, or you can't get to better meat, or if it's just going to go bad anyway, then it's ok. but if those circumstances don't apply, then the only kind of meat or dairy that it's ok to buy is when it came from animals raised sustainably.

romans 14:15 says that if you are hurting others by the foods you eat, you are not guided by love, and not to let your appetite destroy someone Christ died for.

this seems like a reference to all the environmental problems from the meat industry. some of those problems are:

    1. A 2006 united nations report called the meat industry "one of the top two or three most significant contributers to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from global to local."
    2. The meat industry uses half of all water in the USA.
    3. Feeding a meat eater requires 10 times more farmland than it does to feed a vegetarian.
    4. About 10 billion land animals in this country alone face all types of torture and death... EACH YEAR. Compare that to about 50 million abortions in the past 40 years, and you tell me which one is more important.
    5. The livestock industry has contributed 18 percent of all greenhouse gasses.
    6. Decaying meat lines our intestines and makes it more difficult to properly absorb nutrients.
    7. Meat is acidifying to our bodies (being too acidic causes most of the damage associated with aging, and causes cancer)

    That situation shall change eventually.
But don't expect to see it in your lifetime.

I do agree that corporate farming is an extremely cruel system and produces an inferior product, so it is pointless.
I do not support it and I do so by not buying their products.

I'm vegetarian and I don't even read the Bible.

    That's like... bonus credit.

The Bible also prohibits the castration of animals. Take that Bob Barker.

I had two meaty steaks today. Damn good , too! I tried to eat no meat for a time, but couldn't keep myself from it. I know that if we truly had love for all living things, we would refrain from supporting such a cruel system. Even so, nothing tastes quite like a medium rare ribeye with a baked potato on the side topped with a slab of cow butter.

    Yummy!

I have nothing but love for those who have chosen to not eat meat, but don't be hatin those of us who still do. It's like an addiction that burns like inflictions of swallowed glass. Create a food that taste like fried pork chops, or a smoked texas style brisket, or slow smoked baby backs, or a good ribeye steak, then I might give up meat. Until then, I'll give thanks for the unfortunate sacrifice, and fill my belly.

Okay, where does the Bible prohibit eating meat. Go ahead and point that out. I want the specific prohibition on eating meat quoted.

Don't weasel, show me the actual prohibition.

Tis the blessing of the bible, it provides lines that anyone can use for almost any cause.

Be ye a meat eater, vegetarian, animal rights activist, or slave owner, or stoning adulteresses...you can find the scripture to validate your thoughts.

(as long as you patently ignore other scriptures)

Usually the emphasis in the Bible is upon not wasting meat, appreciating the life of the animal and limiting the kinds of animals that are eaten. The opening thread quoted a verse that is about kindness to animals, and there are other verses like it. This is a basic principle. In the Bible we are all equalized to each other by death, and we should think about the fact that like all animals we die. That is one Biblical basis of kindness to each other, for which reason we say God is merciful so we should be merciful. All things about God are interpreted in a way similar to this. God is mysterious and above us and beyond death, and we yield to God's wisdom which should be obtainable by observing nature.

Ecclesiastes 3:21 Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down to the earth?

Someone claimed that Scripture is "clear" on the issue. Therefore, I seek an absolute and "clear" statement.

proverbs 12:10 tells us when it is wrong to BUY meat, and romans 14:15 tells us to eat less meat because of pollution from the meat industry.

It's a very versatile book. You could use it to build a house. It tells you when the train is coming. It helps you choose who to fire in your workplace.

All I see is two verses taken completely out of context.

The only thing in the Bible that I know of that remotely supports vegetarianism is the passage where Daniel and his companions grow stronger than the kings men by eating vegetables instead of meat. The only difference with this is, while vegetarianism is supported, eating meat isn't prohibited.

And the absolute prohibition is where?

Where is the commandment requiring me to be vegetarian?

I'll be back, with your order.

BTW, meat eating causes wars, illness, un-controllable lust, draught ---but this knowledge is above the head and shoulders of western civilisation's grand-parentage.

The karmic-payback for enmass meat eating is documented generation after generation ---just analyse the last two centuries by counting and comparing pound-for-pound the mutual losses ---cadaver-to-cadaver.

Such societies will incur enemies that may or may not seem befitting the "Good-guys" side.

    Vandal vs Romans perennially.

In regards to "be like your father in Heaven" ---do you suppose that "fox-hunting" & factory farming & gentlemen-Farmers all occur in heaven?

How does one Logically compute via,
"By each according to his works",
the cosmic "Price" accured to one-self [or to a mass of patrons],
the "cost" of a beast's carcass for thanksgiving?

How long does it take to tally-up mass karmic pay-back?

    Let us examine known examples:

In circa 1973, the World Trade Center Twin Towers were Built . . .

In circa 1885, downtown Dresden Germany was Built . . .

In circa 1852, Hiroshima & Nakasaki ports were greatly revonated . . .

It is true that I don't get where you are coming from with this. In the first place, what is uncontrollable lust? Sounds like making up excuses.

Wow, where I come from we call that Metaphysical Malpractice.

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

But . . . it actually occurred enmass across a large swatch of continents . . . mass karmic pay-back occured!!!!!!!!

It is historical fact that WE ARE OBLIVIOUS to how & why . . . and also, that present day society hardly knows their own history.

Look at any mechanism in the world and contemplate how it is that only a few technicians know what really is happening "how & why".

Insurance companies maintain statistical charts & figures . . . but after a while their capital cash reserves will cover any possible oversites in historical flucuations.

It's not about "following the Money Trail" ---it's about being born & then working & then dying, time and time again, doing the same repetative tasks birth after birth enmass along with comrades at arms or on the assembly line or protest line or simply siring another brood of lemmings ----this is the historical record, its the status quo.

The spirit soul is putting on garments that define his position in life and then knowledge of NOTHING ABSOLUTE leads to super-mundane trench-life.

    Hare Krishna,
    Bhaktajan
