Is there any rite of passage in Judaism similar to maybe like the Ijtihad in Islam among the Jews that leads to this heaven on earth, or inner peace, respectively? Did any of the prophets endure anything like this to reach prophethood? What was so special about the prophets that God chose them to be his messengers or what have you?

I don't think there is such a thing as a journey to lead one to heaven on earth; but perhaps, to lead heaven to oneself, as Jesus said that the Kingdom of Heaven is within anyone of us and not a place apart of ourselves. (Luke 17:21)

Regarding our prophets, they used to come from schools of prophets, where they would learn the art to act as mediators between God and man.

He said the kingdom of heaven is within us and all around us and with that last part you can see there can be heaven on earth.

He also said split a piece of wood and there you will find me which means love literally, move a stone and there I will be which means compassion literally. So as you can see these two things through acts of kindness can establish a heaven on earth. Its a spiritual journey isnt it?

I went over the text, back a few verses and further a few, and the interpolation of "and all around us" is not there. Since you don't quote for evidence of your assertion, I can't take your word for it. Besides, if that expression was there, it would be a reference to the kingdom of heaven within the others around us. In potential, I mean, ripe for development.

Well, as we're on the Judaism board, I think the original poster is looking for a Jewish perspective, not a Christian one. :)

Well, he or she will find very hard to persuade us that the kingdom of heaven is a literal place to go to and not a metaphorical state of mind.

Ah the Lubavitchers hey? I think they're probably the most interesting group on the planet, considering that they're probably more like the Nazarenes and early Christians than any Christian group in the world could ever hope to be.

They don't base their beliefs on gospels or epistles. No, they're a Hasidic sect. Their belief that their last Rebbe might be a messiah is what makes them so interesting. What if this explains how Christianity got started? What if we can finally figure out where many concepts in Christianity originated, so we don't have to dig up dead fossils?

What we need is right here, not in the past but in the present.

What's even more compelling is the Christian yearning for manifestations of "the true church" that had been lost so long ago ....... What if these Lubavitchers can "show us the way" (so to speak) on how to restore that church?

Maybe the Lubavitchers are a kind of "resurrection" (so to speak) of something deeply spiritual that had been lost long ago.

So many attempts to restore the "true church" have failed ...... the Catholic Church, Islam, the Mormon Church, Watchtower Society, the Sun Myung Moon cult and various other cults ...... they have all failed. They have all failed because ...... they tried to do it without Judaism.

If the Lubavitcher concept of "the kingdom of heaven" is the same as that taught by Jesus, then that may be what we need to complete the baptism of the world ......

Oh one more thing. Just another thought ......

I wonder if the Christian yearning for a restoration of the "true church" is a bit like the Jewish yearning for a restoration of the Temple of Jerusalem. Perhaps both will be restored when the messiah comes. If so, all attempts to restore the true church are futile just as all movements to restore the Temple are against the divine will. Only the messiah can restore both the Temple and the true church. We're both waiting for the same thing and we can't complete the deed ourselves ...... It doesn't mean we should do nothing. We should prepare ourselves for the coming of the messiah, but preparation does not equal completion.

Holy S_ _ _ Salty! I think you just paid off all the time I have spent here! If I had been born a Lubavitcher or a member of (pretty much any) Oriental Orthodox group, I would have never left the fold, I can tell you.

Ever read any of the mythical and mystical stories about the experiences (real and fictionalized) of the Shoah? I believe that they have pretty much an understanding that I can bearly grasp in my most estatic or most scholarly moments. And I am neither a bad mystic nor thinker.

Thanks, you give me heart , Friend!
