I have a thread elsewhere about the deciding of December 25th as Christmas.

I also have an idea on the 'true' meaning of Christmas as seen from my belief system. I believe that the idea of Jesus is really a symbol of the birth of our universe, and that Mary is a symbol of 'that from which universes are born'. The original story was talking about the birth of the universe. But such concepts were difficult for people in ancient cultures to understand. So the story of a woman giving birth to a baby was used to symbolize the birth of our new universe. (Buddhism uses a very similar symbolism to tell the same story of the birth of our universe.)
So the way I see it, Christmas is really about celebrating the birth of our universe. Happy birthday universe!
