This used to be a truism, some decades ago. No longer, sadly. The fundies are not the poor and illiterate in most of the modern world struggles. Quite the opposite. They are the educated and the wealthy as often as not. Many terrorists are college educated kids.

Too many people today are not interested in getting educated. They do not care about facts. They desire to be told what it is they already believe so they can feel validated. How can one educate a populace that has no desire to be educated?

 

Are you saying the folks that they recruit are educated?

That the Christian short earth fundie literalists understand evolution?

that the Muslim radicals understand that killing innocents is not Quranic?

 

You don't eliminate fundamentalists through education, but civil unrest. You give the people to rationally question and make choices. Then you take the fundamentalists cause away from them. There will always be extremist elements, but it's strength and goals change with the general population.

And I'm not picking on the Muslim World. It is almost as bad here in the states. How many of those who are doing their best to destroy our constitutional rights are college educated. Most of them. How many in this country who refuse to accept that torturing prisoners was doing anything wrong are college educated? It was the college educated who were responsible and to this day refuse to accept that we did anything wrong.

How many of the terrorists who were involved in the 9/11 attacks had college educations? All of them did. How many people most responsible for W's Iraq war say it was justified are college educated. Most all of them.

The list goes on and on and on.

 

There is one education that makes you a capable laborer for economy. There is another education that makes you a wise human being. I think that education is severely lacking everywhere. Who supported arab mercenaries in Syria who became ISIS? Who supported arab mercenaries in Libya, that will soon become ISIS? Who supported mujahideen in Afghanistan, that lateron became Taliban? Who supported neo-nazis in Ukraine? Who supported Saddam/Osama? Who destroyed Iranian democracy? People ought and deserve to know the facts that will make them intelligent enough to make the right choices about their worldview and the right track of action.

Muslims too ought to educate themselves both in secular and religious sciences. Their prosperity is their own responsibility, not that of US/NATO. And the stupid things they are doing in the name of Islam are highly unislamic, which shows how "highly educated" they are in their own religion.

 

The way I see it the education of a citizen of the world is there responsibility of all citizens of the world. Given that the citizen is willing and that the citizens are able.
