Where the magic of metaphors can make a difference I believe the 'Jinn' to be a label for our own predicament. What then are higher forms of disembodied intelligences? Perhaps 'spirits' is a generic classification covering all sorts of emanations. There, I've compared you to an Angelic being, I've wanted to do that since day 1.

I think in Islam the Jinn are a distinct group of beings, created from a different substance than humans.

Yeah, I think Jinn can be viewed as spirits having a human experience, with the different methods of coping described in the topic.

I only know a very little about the jinn, so I could be way off, but I wonder if what other cultures refer to as fairy folk or others yet refer to as poltergeists are the same or similar beings to jinn.
