It being to prevent transmission -- duh! We forgot -- not infection. The virus is far too small to be stopped by a mask and can't survive in isolation anyway: the purpose is to prevent spread of airborne spit particle by sneezing or coughing or singing or shouting, or whatever?
The masks stop most...they keep a sneeze from going 15 feet or your breath from going six feet. Most of the articles get stuck or are not spewed as a aerosol into someone else's face....
It loses the momentum and drops to the ground or sticks to other moist fibers in your mask...
I dont like them....i dislike breathing my exhaust. Hence I dont go on trains and planes or public transport and minimize my time in grocery stores

Cloth does not filter out smells, so I question the efficacy of cloth masks in reducing transmission.

..re people coughing and spluttering, it is good manners to use a handkerchief.
I don't favour a society in which it becomes the norm to wear a mask.
Everyone to their own. Some people just love living in a metropolis.

Hydrogen sulphide gas is almost as toxic as hydrogen cyanide. A single lungful of the pure gas will kill you. When the oil rigs hit 'gas' alarms go off and lights start flashing and everybody has to drop what they're doing and get a gas mask.

Yep.
Cloth filters out particles.
Cloth is better than nothing in filtering out larger, complex molecules, like covid, but is not so efficacious against relatively tiny molecules that trigger smell sensors. For them, as @RJM Corbet says, you need a mask with a sophisticated filter.
I think of Japan. There it's good manners to keep your germs to yourself, mask-wearing has been the norm for years.
It's all about perception, really.
Please do not take this as a cheap shot ... but we have the range of hijab through to burka?
In the parts of London I move in, the niqab/burka is relatively rare, whereas the hijab is the most common, so much so it passes without comment.

Masks are the best that we can do apart from jabs and distancing (which does not work everywhere, certainly not in bustling bursting Indian cities). Niqab will not really do. It does not stick to the contour of the face, but still, IMHO, it is better than no cover.

The smell includes germs that pass through cloth masks.
You can't filter out viruses, even with a HEPA filter.

Naturally, a virus can't survive for long without a host, but it is not limited to seconds or even minutes.

Mankind want their cake and eat it. They always want to blame others.
It is a contradiction. The vast majority of people vote for a government who are the most successful in acieveing economic growth.
They are not particularly concerned by how this is achieved.
The approach to control climate-change by fiddling around with emission schemes / taxes is only tinkering with the edges.
It cannot achieve its goals. The only thing that can do that, is an overhaul of the global financial system.
That is not happening. Evil continues to predominate. i.e. capitalist economic philosophy
