Trusting Jesus's prescriptions for living

Completely muddying the actual issue.

EDIT
@Longfellow
Are you asking how you think Christ prescribes you should live your own life, or how Christ prescribes that society at large should live theirs?
Before I answer that, I'll repeat my question. Do you have some reason for thinking that Jesus meant for his disciples to sell all their possessions?

Anyway God responds to sincere seeking regardless of time and place and religion. IMO It's an individual response and not about world peace and unity or communal social justice, etc ...
We might be talking on different wavelengths. I don't see what that has to do with what I'm discussing in this thread.

And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”

And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Mark 10:17-22

What are you discussing? Be specific. You are always making allusions to something that you never seem able to plainly come down to.

I just get lots of words, and lots of threads

Anyway ...

What would you call this?

John 13
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Is that how he prescribes you should live your own life, or how he prescribes that society at large should live theirs?

- Forgive seventy times seven (Matthew 18:21–22)
- Turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39)
- Give to those who ask (Matthew 5:42)
- Love your enemies and pray for them (Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:27–28)
- Do not store up treasures on earth (Matthew 6:19–21)
- Pray in secret (Matthew 6:6)
- Do not judge, or you will be judged (Matthew 7:1–2)
- Sell possessions and give to the poor (Luke 12:33; Matthew 19:21)
These are all awesome and exactly what I mean by following jesus ...looking for your christ within...

This is what I learned from unity but also learned (from io) that anyone can learn from any denomination any religion. You can find your way....should you choose to.

I'm looking at this again, trying to see how it relates to what I'm discussing in this thread. I'm talking about Jesus's prescriptions for living, like the examples I gave, and you're talking about God's response to people seeking. I don't see the connection. Then you say it's an individual response and not about world peace and unity or communal social justice, etc. Do you mean that you don't think that Jesus gave any prescriptions about those things?

Can you provide specific examples of where Christ preached about world peace and unity or communal social justice?

There are passages like this one:

“For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’

“They will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Matthew 25:41-45

World Peace and Unity

The Beatitudes: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God" (Matthew 5:9).

Universal Love: Commanded love for enemies and persecutors, breaking tribal boundaries (Matthew 5:43–48).

The High Priestly Prayer: Prayed for all believers to be completely unified as one (John 17:20–23).

Communal and Social Justice

The Nazareth Manifesto: Inaugurated his public ministry by proclaiming good news to the poor, liberty to captives, and freedom for the oppressed (Luke 4:16–19).

The Sheep and the Goats: Judged nations strictly by how they treated the hungry, homeless, sick, and imprisoned (Matthew 25:31–46).

Woes to Religious Leaders: Denounced elite leaders for tithing spices while neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23).

I know he said things like that, which all flow from this:

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.

But to me Christ’s message was never about world unity or social justice. He spoke on a spiritual level to the heart and soul of every person. IMO

Me thinks he spoke to your heart and soul.

Those with ears may hear.

I evidently dont have those ears... now as you are aware many of the words purported to be his resonate with me...and each of us sees those words differently for some/maybe most of the world they mean very little...they have other words which resonate with them.

Hi, @Longfellow

I started a post in response this morning, which I then erased. I'll try again ... but this might take a couple of avenues.

- Is there such a thing as Jesus's prescriptions for living?
If not that, then what is the world's sacra doctrina about?

- Which Jesus? One of the ones in the gospels? One of Paul's Jesuses? Some historical Jesus? One of the Jesuses of Christianity or Islam or Baha'i or philosophical schools or personal philosophies (mine for example :D) ?
A bit of rationalisation here:
Which Jesus? – the Jesus of the NT. That's your primary dataset.
One of the ones in the gospels? – There's only one in the Gospels.
One of Paul's Jesuses? – There's only one in Paul.

To suggest multiple Jesuses suggests an inability to reconcile the texts. That's why, in any tradition, the text goes hand in hand with commentary or, as we say, Scripture and Tradition.

(A note here, some read the Reformation's Sola Scriptura, 'scripture alone', to mean anyone who reads scripture understands it. It doesn't, and it never did. The idea that scripture is magically 'self-explanatory' or 'self-disclosing' is refuted by scripture itself.)

Some historical Jesus?
The Jesus of the NT is the only one we've got.

One of the Jesuses of Christianity or Islam or Baha'i or philosophical schools or personal philosophies (mine for example :D) ?
All derived from the NT.

- What does "Jesus's prescriptions for living" even mean?
Well it's your question ... 🤔

What he says in the gospels?
What other source is there?

What I think the real Jesus said if there was one?
Well if you don't think there was one, why labour the point?

How can we know what his prescriptions are, if they are not what the NT says they are?
We can't, can we? Again, if you doubt the NT, then why are you wasting your time?

... when there is so much disagreement about what it means ...
Is there?

Love God, Love your neighbour ... Does anyone disagree that's what the text says?

- What does it mean to trust his prescriptions for living? Cut off my right hand if it has an ugly scar (which it does and which I certainly do not intend to do)? If not, just pick and choose whatever I like?
Again, this is what Scripture and Tradition.

Don't cut off your hand. Don't poke out your eye, and don't put a millstone round your neck and jump into the sea. And do read texts contextually, and don't take a verse out of context and assume the most literal reading.

- Are there, or have there ever been, any people anywhere who actually do or did trust his prescriptions for living?
Yes. A few, quite notably. The vast majority, anonymously.

- Is there any reason to trust his prescriptions for living?
No-one can answer that for you.

What happens or might happen if people do it, that anyone would want to happen?
I don't understand the question.

- Is it something that he would want people to do?
- Is it something that God approves of if there is one?
🥱

And now we even have AI Jesus, lol

Anyway, I seem to have hijacked another thread. Will withdraw

Perhaps until the heart and soul of every person gets such a message our hopes for world peace and social justice are in vain. With such a message I think peace and justice would flow quite naturally.

- Sell possessions and give to the poor (Luke 12:33; Matthew 19:21)
Start here then. Do you think this was addressed to everybody in the world, as a universal social prescription, or to a select few of humanity prepared to give up everything for God? Perhaps monks and nuns and others like them?
It looks to me like it's for disciples and anyone who wants to be one.
Ok. But the way I see it the 'master' teachings to the 'elect' become watered down to become social and society mores, imo.
I don't see how that relates to what I said. It looks to me like it's for his disciples and anyone who wants to be one.
Perhaps. But it means entire renunciation of the things of the world. How would material society continue to function? Do you have material suggestions? Would the main body of society ever do it?
Is there some reason why you think he's telling his disciples to sell *all* their possessions?
What does it mean to you ... that's what RJM's asking ... and I'm wondering ...
