A while back, Swedish Priest, who was visiting down here, had a tale on this subject. He told me of a church in Sweden were the Manse was built nearby a well in order that the priest could keep a close eye on it- in case any of the parishioners started worshiping the water! He didn't believe the story himself but it still gives you an idea of the Church's horror of folk worshiping the elements.

There was a misunderstanding, a suspicion of what seemed pagan, heathen.
Augustine suffered from this.

It is not that the Manichees (and others) perceived the wonders of nature, the sea,the sky and the fire, as though they were the Divine in toto. They saw instead God working in, manifest in nature. The difference is the difference between an idol and an icon.
