Here in the UK, it is illegal to carry a knife in public. Some people are pressing for an automatic custodial sentence for anyone caught carrying a knife in a public place. I can understand that logic, given the number of stabbings there seems to be in major cities here. However, for whatever reason, NONE of the parties seem supportive of a mandatory custodial sentence for anyone caught carrying one (I am not speaking of fisherman, or those with some other real reason to carry one, of course).
Stick a knife into my heart, and the odds are that I will die.
However...
Believe it or not, a pepper spray, at least in the UK, is not only classed as an offensive weapon, but as a FIREARM.
How does that work? To me, a firearm is a gun. All I know is that given the choice (such as it is), I would sooner be in discomfort from a pepper spray for ten mins or so (permanent damage is rare), than be slashed or stabbed with a blade.
I see this as an anamoly in law.
Any thoughts?
