l think religion inculcates that unity through its communal ritual, prayers and activities [as does nationalism of course] as there is an extreme human need to belong. However that is an 'our' gang mentality that can never include those that do not subscribe.

The incessant individualism that has developed in the west coupled with the global tensions that reverberated from the world wars, together with capitalistic ideals which have a separating influence, scuppered any universal unity between folks.. since the tide of the 60's however and particularly among the conscientious youth of today who have the world wide web connections, l see a motive towards bridging the gaps to get to that 'place' of non differentiation [heres hoping anyway!]
