Could lead codices prove ‘the major discovery of Christian history’? - Yahoo! News

British archaeologists are seeking to authenticate what could be a landmark discovery in the documentation of early Christianity: a trove of 70 lead codices that appear to date from the 1st century CE, which may include key clues to the last days of Jesus' life. As UK Daily Mail reporter Fiona Macrae writes, some researchers are suggesting this could be the most significant find in Christian archeology since the Dead Sea scrolls in 1947.

The codices turned up five years ago in a remote cave in eastern Jordan—a region where early Christian believers may have fled after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. The codices are made up of wirebound individual pages, each roughly the size of a credit card. They contain a number of images and textual allusions to the Messiah, as well as some possible references to the crucifixion and resurrection. Some of the codices were sealed, prompting yet more breathless speculation that they could include the sealed book, shown only to the Messiah, mentioned in the Book of Revelation. One of the few sentences translated thus far from the texts, according to the BBC, reads, "I shall walk uprightly"--a phrase that also appears in Revelation. "While it could be simply a sentiment common in Judaism," BBC writer Robert Pigott notes, "it could here be designed to refer to the resurrection."

One to watch with interest .. good find Nick, thanks for sharing.

Yes ... they were found five years ago!

So progress is ... slow ...

Interesting that there is a depiction of a cross, a tomb and a city in the background, which some read as the Crucifixion which, if true, blows the Jehovah's Witnesses' argument out of the water that the cross was a stake.

God bless,

Thomas

Progress is always slow.... look at the control that was held over the DSS and Nag Hamadi find for decades.

The work done on the human genome shows how fast progress can be made with the net and allowing everyone access to the information...

However when it comes to these finds the powers that be are in fear that something will be discovered that will knock down their house of cards. Interesting it seems that their faith does not make them think that the discovery will validate what they have posited for millenia.

--> Very true.

--> Very true. It speaks of fear not faith.

Christianity is built upon a rock. Christ.

will be interesting to see what these things say though if anyone can decipher them.

Christ says that rock is Peter...or Faith.

But as to translating...we've had such fun with our attempts at the bible, pictographs will be quite interesting....

What if they are the book of mormon??

If anyone knows Hassan Saeda, I would like a photocopy of his plates and scrolls. I will just file it away on my hard drive for safe keeping in case something happens to the originals.

My sense of humor is hoping that they were written by a guy named Norman. Then they will be the books of Norman.

Christianity is robust, and the lead pages aren't likely to change that. My money says that after they are decrypted and translated most people will shelve them as eccentric, boring, redundant materials.

I think they are more worried about being burned, by clever forgers. This would be far from the first time.

Christianity is built upon a man who is also God, and a promise by that God...

The "church" is built upon a "rock" of a fallen man named Peter who eventually gave all for the Lord...

Keep the context.

The findings are interesting. It seems that the experts are a bit vague about their interpretations. They call a city, Jerusalem, without being sure it represents Jerusalem. I fail to see why they think it means "resurrection" out of "standing up..."

I hope they have experts on history 2000 years ago, come from researchers other then Christian apologists. It should include Islamic, Judaic, and secular researchers. Meanwhile, we should remain open to what they find.

There have been so many frauds, we must be cautious. We recall the scandal of the Shroud of Turin, the Ossuary, and pieces of the "true cross" so plentiful as to build a hundred wooden cathedrals. Bone relics of martyrs and saints abound without clear confirmation.

Yet, there have been findings regarded as genuine such as the DSS and Nag Hamadi, and the Gnostic Gospels.

You mention the Jehovah's Witnesses. Are they not a form of the earlier Arian Christianity reflected in Paul's Epistles?

I think that the "rock" comes from the Persian Sect of Mithraism. The rock may have been Mithra (Mithras). Mythology has it that Mithra was born of a rock and his father being Ahura Mazda the creator god. The rock had great significance to Mithraists. It could have been diffused to the then embryonic Christianity along with the Persian Mithraic Eucharistic meal, the solar wafer representing Mithra the Sun god, baptism, the Holy Spirit from Spenta Maingu, and Mithra's resurrection bringing salvation and saving grace.

Perhaps the recent finding might help reveal this or show that those beliefs came later to Christianity as it merged with Roman Mithraism.

lol you been smoking crack mate ?

Oh I think most folks know that Christianity, as such, almost wasn't. Check up on the story of Constantine. We would today be referring to the Invincible SUN [sic] ... if not for that bloke.

Too bad we got so far off on the wrong footing, pretty well missing the main points, deifying men and whatnot. The opening scene of Kevin Smith's Dogma kind of says it all.

But the Dead Sea Scrolls didn't prove all that revelatory, pretty much because the scholars have already got their minds made up. "Don't confuse me with the facts, this is how things have always been!!!"

Ad Hominem does not change the recorded history. I did not invent any of this information. Scholars have done the hard work. Take a course in remedial reading of English then find these scholarly books. Read them Mate.
