As they try to learn our language from us without having any instruction, just grouping words together in a somewhat nonsesical format is an issue.

Currently we have artificial parrots, not AI...me thinks that is part of the problem.
 
I don't think we are capable of creating anything other than artificial parrots. AI true-believers (and it is really a religion for some Silicon Valley types) think the difference between the bots we make and our own minds is just quantitative, that with some increase in processing power the bots will become minds. I profoundly disagree: I think the difference is qualitative, and that we don't even know enough to understand what it is that is missing in the bots; but we can certainly perceive that there is something missing.
 
Our bot won't be winning the Loebner Prize. Come on back Brian...

One thing our AI will have over us is . . . a GOOD MEMORY :D
 
I think AI could be the next phase of evolution.

The future is a life permanently connected, chips will be fitted to our brains every every movement and every thought everything will be recorded, if this is done from birth then our consciousness will be downloaded into the machine and immortality is a real possibility.

Well, religionists are always like that. The major difference is fuzzy thinking (I am not an expert on this). We have advanced some on this front and will make surely further progress. I see AI minds as a distinct possibility in future.

First off, let me state that I do not believe we can create "hard AI" (look this up, in the sense of an independent functioning human-like intelligence). AS Roger Penrose and some of his ilk say, "it is impossible for AI to replicate the discovery of the Godel Theorem" (very long and involved argument).

However, we passed the Turing test long ago. That is there are plwnty of AIs whom we mistake for human beings.

NCOT, I a have to differ with you. Until the "hard problem of consciousness" is solved within physics, we will not be able to transfer our consciousnesss to any collection of technology. Computers and AI and SW, regardless of how advanced they are cannot even in principle substitute for wetware (our brains) until we can describe qualia in physics. Again, Penrose and a lot of heavy hitters agree with me when we say "wpon'tever happen".

Wil, works for me. We are AIs constructed by the one true consciousness. Could be (that is it is logically possible).

It is sure a collective illusion, but we are not artificial intelligence. Take out 'Occam'. Slash. There is no need to add one more level.
