Don't shoot the messenger..... this analogy is open for discussion

Fundamentalism is like believing that a tomato is a vegetable, but despite the evidence proving it is a fruit, some still choose to believe it is a vegetable.
What is their 'reasoning' for this?
Because their parents and grandparents believe it is a vegetable...because it tastes like a vegetable...because they were taught that it is a vegetable.
This is the criteria they use to deny the truth, so they will search only for biased and subjective material that will support their current belief...all because of a psycho-emotional attachment.
You can eat it like a vegetable...eat it like a fruit...eat it like a potato if you wish, but at least do it with full consciousness of the truth.

Ah truth. That most contested of words. Reality seems to suggest that perception is trusted far more than truth is. And what is to me very strange, perception rules whether the subject is of vague truths (where one would expect some disparity) to hard truths (where there really should not be any room for ambiguity at all).

Perception rules!

"There is no God other than Truth. What is the difference between Truth and fact? You may put on a coat today and wear a different dress tomorrow. This is not Truth, it is only a fact, because it is subject to change. But Truth always remains the same. The Gita refers to Truth as Ritham. So Truth is not reporting what you see, hear, and experience. What you see and hear is worldly truth. It is not Truth in the strict sense of the word. It is only external truth (pravritti satyam). But the inward Truth (nivritti satyam) remains the same in the past, present, and the future. In this world of plurality, there is the underlying principle of unity. Of all the numbers 1,2, 3, 4.. the most important number is 1. AIl the other numbers are mere modifications of the number 1. 1+1 becomes 2. 9–1 becomes 8. Thus 1 forms the basis for all the numbers. This is the unity in multiplicity, this Unity is the Truth."

Sai Baba - Divine Discourse, Sep 11, 1988.

"Jesus died for our sins."
The only way to get to heaven is by believing in ... _______.
Or of course, some will qualify that if you die for ____, that's even better.
"Ours is the only true path." Sure they are right in their faith. But we are right-er.

Indeed, a tomato insists on being a vegetable to some, and I suspect that even as tomato-lovers, they've never really bitten into one - like an apple.

No small wonder then. With a closed mind and as often as not a closed heart in some of the ways that matter most, even the Fundamentalists tend to get the true fundamentals, WRONG.

Pity, that, as even unintelligent Love is sometimes better than hatred, divisiveness, and smug self-righteousness. But the kind of true Tolerance, the Acceptance and Forgiveness, Inclusiveness and Understanding, Insight and genuine other-Interest which ____ taught. Ahhh, now THESE are the kinds of fundamentals that might save our world - IF they were even more popularly preached, let alone PRACTICED.

Fundies like to talk a lot of shit, and mostly just talk a lot of shit, and if you go to one of their gatherings it soon becomes clear that forces and energies are definitely at work. Yet they become mediums for something very astral, very unpleasant, and they essentially sew the seeds of their own future unhappiness. They do much of this unwittingly and unknowing, so I do not mean to fault them. I simply point out, that they too, get what they give, reap as they sew. They cannot avoid this any more than the rest of us. And this is why, sadly yet necessarily, ___ cannot EVER appear to them as they desire and claim to expect, even if - for awhile - they can certainly deceive themselves, and one another, stating, "I have FOUND ___," even doing so openly, boldly and proudly.

Matthew 6:5-7 provides advice and commentary especially for this lot.

And as with much else found in their very own Holy Book, this Truth also, they heed not.
