Yogananda is quite controversial within orthodox Hinduism, as his teachings became largely syncretic, catering to the west. SRF openly declares itself non-Hindu.
Indeed they do, to the extent that it's hard to tell if it's Hindu or not. That's why there is little mixing of the two versions in the west. The Indian immigrant population have brought it with them.
