In Look of Conversation Partner

I am a graduate student and I am in need of some help. I have been assigned to "engage in holy, evangelistic conversation" with someone who is not Christian or with someone who is considering Christianity. I am not looking to be belligerent or demeaning. Just looking to satisfy my class requirement and do it in good faith. It only requires that we speak 3 times over the next 3 months. If anyone could please help me out I would greatly appreciate it!

Don't let me put words into your mouth.... but the class assignment is to proselytize? Convert?

Are you studying to be a missionary from an evangelical college?

While I believe myself to be a follower of Christ...many here don't consider me Christian...if I fit your bill...if you don't get a better candidate...I am willing to assist and learn...

in the meantime.... take a look around... you might just find some threads worthy of discussion.

Go down to your local homeless shelter. You should be able to easily find someone in need of such a discussion. Many soup kitchens are run by Christian organizations, so you should fit right in.
 
pretty sure people on an interfaith website are comfortable enough with their religions that a "evangelist" conversation would turn into a debate. A long going nowhere debate.
 
Okay tparker. I will give you notice first of all that you will not be having a "conversation" in class. Trust me. It will turn into a debate. The following statements will show you what I mean. I can make this remark and sit back and watch the feathers fly.

Jesus is a myth. Unadulterated, categorically a myth. Perceived as a historical figure, we have quite a paradox. Even Paul's accounts would have one question the existence of Jesus as more than a metaphor. How did Jesus accomplish some really amazing feats that appear to have not been noticed outside his fringe group for over a century? Oh I could write pages but you get the point. If not, you will.

The truth is inescapable: there simply could never have been a historical Jesus.

You've made it clear that you may be unconventional but certainly Christian. I assumed that meant you followed what is purported to be the teaching of Jesus. Maybe like ol' Thomas Jefferson you see things differently. Of course I am convinced that Jefferson was a closet Deist!
 
tparker - Sorry. In trying to spur debate I got off topic. Maybe somebody will jump in.
 
I appreciate the Jeffersonian Gospels. And many of our forefathers were Deists. I myself am a nontheistic panentheist unitic. The teachings of Christ are what I appreciate reading and working towards following...not in a literal way but reading and learning from the parables, the poetry, the metaphors, the metaphysics...be they historically accurate, we are completely aware they are not...parts may be...which parts is where the discussion lies...for me if it is all made up (I am not saying it is, and I don't believe it ALL is) it wouldn't affect my continued interest in studying and working on understandings of the word that directly effect the interpretations of today.
 
But Edgy, we've really no need to spur debate around here. Our discussions get plenty involved without any stirring. The goal is to learn where others are coming from and develop an understanding on various beliefs and belief systems.
 
Wil - We do not disagree regarding debate: Funk and Wagner defines debate as: "a discussion between people in which they express different opinions about something." I simply used the term spur to encourage.

I have nothing against Jefferson's creative plagiarism. After all, that is how all bibles in use today were written. Whether to placate Emperors, Kings or Popes or whether through "inspired mistranslation". It matters not. I also agree that scattered about that book are great lessons. Problem is the chaff!

Not sure what a "nontheistic pantheist unitic" is but I support your choice as long as it is peaceful.:)

As to Deist, yes most of USA founding fathers were Deist. Most were closet Deist because they likely could never hold any office if they did not show up in some Christian church on Sunday. Funny how time refuses to change certain things!
