Sithaantham Questions and Answers: Part 1 (Introduction and Preface)

THIRUCHITRAMBALAM

Introduction:

We are living in an age where people can barely find time to engage in any religious and philosophical studies. However, as Saivites, it is imperative that we acquire Wisdom from our Saiva scriptures. I am deeply concerned about Saivaism in South Africa, especially after learning of the anti-Saiva practices which have entered some of our Saiva organisations during recent times.

I have been conducting various structured courses at various levels in Saiva Sithaantham. I am overwhelmed by the interest shown thus far. However, there is still a need for Sithaanthic Wisdom to reach as many South African Saivites as possible. I am totally aware, and in full agreement, that Wisdom of this nature is not meant for mass consumption. Saiva Sithaantha scriptures make it clear that a soul which has not performed penance in the past birth/s will not be ready for the intake of Sithaanthic Truths. Imparting Sithaanthic Wisdom to those who are not ready for it is as good as trying to show a blind man the sun. Thus, if you are interested, you may read. If you are not interested, do not worry, as this Wisdom will be imparted to you when you are ready for it -- if not in this birth, it will definitely be imparted to you in the future births, after you have performed immense penance.

As a humble initiative to educate South African Saivites, I have decided to translate a book entitled ‘Sithaantha Vinaa Vidai’ (Sithaantha Questions and Answers). This book is a publication of the Dharmapura Adhinam, Tamil Nadu, and it was authored by one of the greatest of the Saiva scholars, namely, ‘Mahavidvan’ ‘Sithaantha Kalaimanni’, ‘Mudhu Perum Pulavar’ Dr Si. Arunnaivadivehl Mudaliar. The book is written in the form of a dialogue between the Sivaguru and His disciple. The original Tamil book consists of almost 400 pages. I will be translating the book in snippets and circulating it to the Saiva community. I will try my best to circulate snippets at least once in every two weeks, depending on my schedule. May Sivaperumaan bestow Divine Grace for South African Saivites to read these and make a structured study of the Saiva religion.

It is extremely easy to remain ignorant, but it is extremely difficult to acquire wisdom. Very few will desire to trod a difficult path.

The wise do that which is rare to be done.
That which is rare to be done will be impossible for the ignorant.

Yours in Saivaism

PREFACE

"The Vedas is the cow; the Aagamaas is the milk; the Thirumurrais of the Naalvar is the ghee; and the rare taste of that ghee is the Tamil Sivanyaana Bohdham of Meikanndaan residing at Thiruvennai Nalloor".

We, who have taken this human birth on earth, need to know two paths; one is the worldly path and the other is the path of God. The primary books, which teach these two paths, are the Vedas and Aagamaas, respectively. Among these, the Vedas, together with teaching the various aspects of worldly life, also 'implicitly' teach truths pertaining to the path of God. The Sivaagamaas teach only the path of God. Therefore, our ancestors classed the Vedas as general books and the Sivaagamaas as special books. We learn of this from a verse from the Sivanyaana Sithiyaar which mentions, ‘Aaranna Nool Podhu’ (The Vedas are general), ‘Saivam Arum Sirrappu Noolaam’ (The Sivaagamaas are special).

The Tamil works, namely, the Twelve Saiva Thirumurrais, and the Fourteen Sithaanthic Works, are considered to be the essence of the Vedas and Sivaagamaas and these are considered to be general books and special books, respectively. The Thirumurrais teach the path of Love for Siva; and the Sithaanthic works teach the path of Wisdom of Siva.

Dharumai Adhinam Pulavar ‘Maha Vidvan’ Thiru Si. Arunnaivadivehl Mudaliar has written essays pertaining to the teachings of the Fourteen Sithaanthic works in the form of question and answers over many years. These have appeared in the ‘Nyaanasambandham’ magazine published by Dharmapura Adhinam. In keeping with the Divine Intention of the Pontifical Head of Dharmapura Adhinam, these where published as a book entitled, Sithaantha Vinaa Vidai (Sithaantha Question and Answers) and released in the year 1975 on the Gurupoosai of the founder of the Dharmapura Adhinam, Srilasri Gurunyaanasambandhar.

The Pontifical Head of Dharmapura Adhinam has instructed that this book, which has been written in the form of simple essays, from beginning to the end, be published for the second time, so that all may benefit from the teachings. This book was released in Madurai during the Fourth World Saiva Sithaantha Conference hosted by the International Saiva Sithaantha Research Centre of Dharmapura Adhinam.

May Saivites study this book and benefit from its teachings.

As instructed by the Pontifical Head

Namaste and Welcome...

When I first heard of Shiva I was confused...but then when one contemplates what the world would be like without decay... knee deep in poop would not be the worst of it...

Vannakkam Saiva Sithaandham ... Good to hear of your service to South African Shaivas. The problem you describe is typical in the diaspora, when there is a lot of mixing of the various sects of Hinduism. All of them have had a difficult time remaining pure. Best wishes with your project. May the Dancer at Chidambaram bless your work.
