I find it frustrating when someone comments on something insignificant in a post and an exchange ensues based on that instead of the main point.

That, and when an exchange drags on, causing subsequent posts to be lost in the shuffle.

Frustration isn't the right word (for me). Annoying is more accurate.

... either extreme lack of moderation or extremely biased moderation
... entrance of self-declared world teachers, prophets who know everything about everything, and begin teaching you about it all, including informing you what your thoughts are, correcting your every word.
... spammers, trolls

When it comes to forums... especially on this topic...interfaith... our little community does fairly well... out there in the big world that is another story.

One of my frustrations is that so many people on forums never seem to remember how much of the meaning of speech is lost in a printed medium. Even though everyone knows this is true! Way too often the reader puts their personal spin on what the writer said and/or meant - usually assuming it must be a derogatory comment; never stopping to consider that because of the limitations of print, they could have misunderstood the meaning of the post completely!

And of course they react to their perceived understanding in a negative way. Hardly anyone seems willing to take the time to just ask for clarification first.

Are you asking about forums in general or IO in particular?

What I loathe about forums outside of IO are those who either don't take the time to read the rules and/or are too lazy to abide by them or, on the other hand, "trolls" who just adore causing trouble then step back to watch the fireworks.

Another annoying tidbit is when you observe a person doing the exact same thing they are complaining about, like accusing others of not reading their posts, when it's obvious they don't either. The old pot and kettle syndrome. Still, sometimes that's fin to observe, as it provides entertainment.

That's true. Then again it might start a debate regarding the differences between pots and kettles and why one is not compatible with the other, but you're right, it is entertaining sometimes.
