The ancient covenant of man with God is that God will not leave mankind alone without Divine Guidance...and so God has sent Prophets and Messengers from time immemorial to guide sentiuent beings in the universe. The most recent revelation of God to man has a framework and guidance through revealed Writings such as the Kitab-i-Aqdas and the Kitab-i-Ad revealed by Baha'u'llah and in the Will and Testament of Abdul-Baha.
The Holy Day began because some believers wanted to celebrate the Birthday of Abdul-Baha but because His Birthday was on May 23rd which was when the Bab declared His Mission and it was the beginning of the dispensation Abdul-Baha suggested they instead observe the Day of the Covenant later in the year...
