Your Daily Rant

Snows have gone here ... the apple blossoms are out ... this time last year I was in Kyoto ...
We are aways from blossoms, but odds are most of what is left of the snow on NJs drive is melted and little if any shoveling was needed...nature giveth the beautiful vistas and we are back...simply by the extreme effort of waiting a day.

Au Contraire. Not everyone has the luxury of waiting for the thaw. My wife manages a 24 hour pharmacy. So I spent the 1st full day of spring knocking a path through 8 inches of heavy wet snow for her!

No, her shift started at 5AM before much snow had accumulated. It was in anticipation of her return home at the end of her shift, the driveway needed to be cleared. As luck would have it though, that ended up not being until 10PM, because her namby pamby assistant, a man not half my age, called out claiming to be exhausted from shoveling snow!

Student actually pulled their phone out in the middle of the exam, took a picture of it, smiled at me, and went back to taking the exam. Minutes later, took their phone back out, filled out a question near the top of the exam, and handed it into me. Told student they failed. And yet, the parents have left me multiple emails and voicemails arguing I have a grudge against their child and that the student shouldn't fail.

TGIF.

Ah, modern technology. To think, all that wasted time scrubbing ink off my hands!:D

"We have a rule in class. Turn your phones off and leave them in your backpack unless there is a legitimate emergency or your child is on a transplant list. You have to provide proof that your child is on a transplant list. If there's a 'next time', I confiscate the phone until the end of class."

Hell, one of my former professors had everyone that had a cell phone turn it off and hand it over to him before class. Alas, he no longer teaches due to Alzheimer's (I'm not sure if he's still alive...)

Can't sleep after being abruptly awakened by gunshots (not in the apartment complex, but nearby.) The furred purrson plural won't go to sleep, either.

Sounds like our old neighborhood when we first got married. The locals used to use the dumpster in back of our apartment for target practice.... and each other. Of course now we live in a safe community with a rifle range a few miles away where hunting aficionados fire their automatic weapons!o_O

Yeah, the school discussed a rule where we collected phones during exams but there were concerns about invasion of students' privacy.

There is a standard "no phones/tablets/devices out during exams" policy in the handbook that all students must agree to. So that's what I'll ultimately be able to shut the parents down with. The fact that they know about that policy and are still complaining, and that the student was so bold (they had to know the moment they pulled their phone out that they were going to fail...) is what bugs me.

Phones are easy enough to turn off to take care of the privacy issue...I like the one where they have to lock them in a case....and don't get to unlock till they leave the schoolday.

Yeah, but then they might actually learn something and we can't have that....

Sorry I'm grumpy. I'm going into parent/teacher conference week and that is one of my least favorite times of the year.

My condolences on the parent/teacher conferences, especially with the parents of the kid that cheated.

I suggest that you drown in :kitty: sites/videos the minute you get home after the conferences. Okay?

As a manager my favorite thing to do regarding a problem with an employee was have them get in my chair...and I'd sit in the guest chair. And I'd ask them what they would think the appropriate response would be, how it could be handled better...and keep asking questions till we got to one we agreed with.

i did the same with Sunday school kids.... it often but not always worked amazingly well...have no idea where I got it from.

That is a good approach. I may have to steal that.

So my niece asks if I can help her and her husband file their tax return. A bit short notice, but sure I say, just bring me your W-2's. So they do. All the way back to the last time they filed, 2013!!! Dear-heart, do you think maybe it would have been a good idea to let me know a little sooner you needed help filing?o_O
