Catharsis on the mall...in DC through noon Sunday...

The first year we built a 6'x8' jail cell protesting the racist drug war and judicial system as well as industrialized prisons...the second year we built the temple of rebirth and the event was about PTSD and healing trauma, this year was Equal Rights, for women and all...and we built a temple space called Infinity Gathered and burned the memorial prayer wheels you see hanging...

Public space being used by the public for a free and open to the public protest event...what a wonderful weekend..

an entire event...all built by volunteers and donations, no corporate sponsorship logos everywhere and free to the public...workshops, events in the shadow of the monument...

the next Catharsis on the Mall...

the artist wanted two thirteen foot spires for the alter in the middle, and a spire on the top which penetrated down through the roof and split into two with the two posts pointing at the spires with a 1/4" space between them all... quite the thing to figure out how to build and install.

After decades of building commercial structures...with employees doing the work for money.. I am learning a new thing... working with volunteers, who haul lumber, cut, sand, prebuild sections for shipping, truck, unload and assemble on site...hundreds of hours, thousands of hours... it took 40 people, gathered after midnight from those campers still up an around to pick up that roof and walk it to the top. All of the temples above were done by hand, no C&C machines, no cranes lifting, a whole bunch of manpower, blood, sweat and tears....and happy give up the time to take part.

this is the concept sketch....during the burn a pedestal will burn away in the base lowering weights will fall and her arms will raise....if all works right...

the wires to the hands will not exist...

got about a third the way up and the cable snapped. then the shoulder burned through and she seemingly lifted one part way up all by her self...then it fell forward in and okey dokey move that is popular with the youth in the states (some gotcha game)...the stained glass made some interesting beads and melds in the ash...

I'd guess less than 30 minutes..but have to wait to see the tapes...I was busy we had issues with our electronic igniters on fireworks, cable snapping on the arms...I was running around and adrenaline time is not to be trusted...seemed real fast. but the pile was still burning and people were still cooking potatoes, cakes, cobblers and breakfast burritos in the coals in the morning..

I had a gall stone attack in the middle of that build.and spent 2.days curled up in a hammock in the woods. Precursor of my aorta tear, the last build I was on. Been working a little the artist for some future work, dreaming of burning again.

Next burning, imagine most of your ailments going up in flames along with your project. It may help until you visit your PCP (if you don't undergo a :kitty:scan beforehand...)
