Most people when the word hip hop is mentioned automatically think of scantily clad women and grown men showing of jewellery and cars while glorifying violence. However beneath this surface hip hop music can be very much spiritual. Does anybody here listen to this underground hip hop? Who are your favorite artists and which songs would you recommend for their spiritual messages?

Hi,

Yes I'd be interested in this too cos I like the general vibe but not the dodgy stuff you refer to...

Reggae Mon ! Especially Bob Marley's early stuff with Peter Tosh and Bunnny Livingston. I think it was known as Kingston Trench. Why, I don't know, other than it may have been the city neighborhhood where this style arose.

O K, I know that hip hop is today's soulful music, but Im afraid I'm just not moved by it. Past me I guess, but maybe it takes a higher level of perception to see and hear the "real" in it.

flow....:p

Oh yeah? Example of how this "music" is sipirtual? Also what if we look at the origins of hip hop / rap "music"....
Your looking at the mainstream hip hop with artists such as 50 cent etc.

In these last days of time
As the earth spins faster
I often fantasize about life in the here-after
Paradise, the afterlife, land of the pleasant
I dream of how my life will be when I get to heaven
I don't embrace the tast of death
But I don't fear it
Visions of heaven draw me near it
Everlasting life, understand it
Obey the commandments, universal laws
I prophesized about heaven
This is what I saw
I was placed in the land of milk and honey, fascination
I was given powers beyond the average imagination
But peep this, what I saw next left me speechless
In heaven, everyone has the same level of uniqueness
In heaven, theres no greed, no need for worldy things
No diamond studded rings, peasants become kings
I don't know about you all, but this is where I got to live
Where men and women don't have to be so provocative
And live as true kings, see it in the way we do things
Intoxicate your mind without that gin and juice that Snoop brings
By far, in heaven the world is ours
No drugs, money and cars
Just suns, moons and stars
Reunited with the universal family
The man in me can't wait for heaven
To fufill my wildest fantasies
As I search for better days and praise the number seven
When I get to heaven

some lyrics from the last emperor -heaven

Why is the sky blue? Why is water wet?
Why did Judas rat to Romans while Jesus slept?

Nas-heaven
If Heaven was a mile away
And you could ride by the gates
Would you try to run inside when it opens would you try to die today?
Would you pray louder finally believing His power?
Even if you couldn't see, but you could feel would you still doubt him?
How would you start acting?

.....
If he knew on his own two feet he could just stroll in
To get away and escape from the craziness
And I bet you there's a Heaven for an atheist

Killah Priest-tai chi
Expand your mind
Seek and you shall find
Walkin through the penile glands, like it was a unfathered man
Knowledge is the key to the mind which is a mysterious doorway
through a long dark hallway
Use your concious as a compass to avoid bein conquered
by nonsense, use your subconcious as a map
Once it's time to head back use your food for thought
and leave breadtracks
Now we can see the third eye, swift as you burn fly
You need common sense as a detour
Up ahead there lies three doors for you to see more
you might have to meditate to the soft melodies from a keyboard
Understandin is your flashlight
It reflects the windows to your past life
No psychiatrics could raid you from off the mattress
As you fall deeper, and it's hypnotized you better read my lips
cause that's the guide, out the hallways of negative
which is always competitive; therefore
you must never let it live
Seek and you shall find
Expand the mind, seek and you shall find

In all genre of music there exists those musicians that play out there spiritual feelings in their music. However HipHop is mostly bang, bling and booty. How far would one have to go down the charts to find the spiritual rap?

Elvis had his moments but it would be hard pressed to say he made his fame on gospel. While there exists a spiritual element most artists bury it fairly deep.

As a socio-political platform to make a statement about the ills of our systems hip hop stands pretty high. Ignoring the lyrics and videos that our youth are listening to will just create more surprise in the future.
