Hi Alex —
... but let's not get too far from the point. Jesus Christ endorsed the Hebrew Law, and where he altered it, He was tougher — the rule against divorce, and command to forgiveness, two good examples ... the 'hippy' image of Jesus, with all that the idea entails, is itself a fabrication of the hippy movement and is mostly nonsense.
A far more accurate image, from His owns words, would be "My way, or no way... " — remember that He died, and His followers died, for refusing to make concessions.
That Our Lord made the supreme sacrifice of Himself for our salvation, that His Love and Mercy is both infinite and unlimited, is as a message in itself, entirely opposed to the hippy ideal of 'do your own thing' or 'tune in, turn on and drop out' ... in that sense His message of Universal Love was taken by the hippies as the call to 'Free Love' an excuse for a shagfest ... in effect they took a profoundly spiritual message, and reduced it to the most material/consumer/animal component, and then convinced themselves and everyone else they were into a deeply spiritual thing ... something that was in fact little more, in reality, than a mastabatory fantasy.

Without treading on too many toes, this does appear to be a peculiarly American phenomena. I know the proliferation of denominations in the US, combined with an intensely materialist/consumerist culture, has lead to a competitive expression, but really there is nowhere near as much of this kind of thing going on in the rest of 'the West' ...... So yeah some christians can be the believe or else, the end is nigh blah blah doomsday cults lol...
I remember hearing a journalist recalling an interview with the leader of 'Shining Path', a Maoist outfit in Peru which had a reputation for brutality second only to Pol Pot. What horrified the interviewer most of all was that the leader was a suave and urbane type, with a degree in law and another in philosophy ...... I know some very, very intelligent Neo nazi's...
