If I ever were to win the lottery I'd have my family volunteer with me on archaeological digs. But I guess I'm just confined to a desk. And for those who don't know, you can just up and volunteer to help out on archaeological digs all around the world. Some parts might be covered such as food and your temporary residence. But overall, it's a volunteer effort you pay for. But I hear it's worth it!
 
Yeah universities with archaeology departments would be the place to start. I don't know if every program is equally open. When we were in college my husband was an archaeology major and was going to do field school as a prerequisite to graduate school but there were some obstacles, some in his planning but some in the program itself.
