It turns out that Vikings didn't settle on one specific burial practice but instead could be very individual. Sometimes a person might be buried with a single wooden or stone marker, but sometimes burials included many stones to present the shape of a ship or a room. And sometimes they just created stone patterns for burials that defy easy explanation.

Most such sites are lost through time due to the land or the stones themselves being re-used, but at Lindholm Hoje a sandstorm covered an entire burial ground, leaving it preserved into the modern day when it was rediscovered:
