is death a good thing?
let us imagine that there are reasons why we exist, and why everything is. then that existence is intelligently designed - not in the religious context, but generally that it all seams very intelligently constructed, or constructs itself so.
if you were the being or entity of the universe, would you make it so that people/creatures die?
let us think of birth as part of the equation; if you were reborn and could remember your past life/lives then all the junk from them would carry over, bogging you down. isn’t it nice to have a fresh start? if you knew this was the case then death would not be so much of a problem perhaps, thence if the entity/being of the universe ‘knows’ this then he/it would not have a problem creating a universe where people die.
if death didn’t exist:
we would become numb/immune to the words entropic natures.
eventually virtually nothing would be new.
we would be missing a major contrast by which we evolve our morality.

Perhaps death allows us to appreciate life. To cherish it like a family heirloom. Not taking it for granted. So that we can concentrated on what's important.

If you are talking reincarnation, I can only see value in it if we "remember' what our life was like previously, so that we can learn from the mistakes we made. I see what you are saying about being bogged down by all the dross that we might carry over, but if those memories are suppressed, would not our subconscious mind not still be affected? Would there still not be wounds that cannot be explained? I'm reminded of the depression that Edgar Allen Poe suffered from which he is quoted, "I am wretched, and I know not why." Is the person who has cancer but doesn't know it better off than a person who has cancer and knows it and thus will seek treament for it?

"All of my life, and times, all of my crimes
It got me looking for the sign that God's alive
Cause there's got to be, more to this life than knives
And cold lines, the violent crimes
I've realized, that they lied, cause God's alive, he's inside of me
There aint gonna be no afterlife where they're judging me
I ain't scared of death, I ain't scared of life
When I die, I'm gonna smile, bring it on, it's a good day to die..."
-Marz

I kind of go with that to a certain degree...

I jolly well hope death is a good thing - it's coming to every last one of us.

MW...I always enjoy your refreshing candor. Or as I would put it, the end is always the beginning of something else, and that something else will always eventually end.

flow....;)

good point about repressed memories, perhaps this is why people seam to be born depressives or similar. it certainly seams that ‘who we are’ is more than our bodily [brain X environment] programming.

yea i kinda go with that.

is death coming to us all? perhaps there is no death nor end only a continuance of life. nothing actually end in the world, all things continue in some way.
or
if we can think infinity, we are infinity
or
‘death cannot be experienced’ i.e. if you do terminate then there is no ‘you’ that will experience death!

Now if we are going to change definitions and the question midstream we need to say so.

Death, the sessation of breath and brain function according to modern monitors on this here planet earth...ie the body you are currently functioning in ceases to function.

So will this death happen to all of us? I'm thinking so.

Is it a good thing? I'm thinking so.

Am I in any hurry? I'm thinking not.

Perhaps death is really neither good nor bad. Maybe it just is. Or maybe it is an illusion that appears to be necessary in the perennial cycles of nature as we know it so far. I think that if the "sting" of death was removed, then we might be able to see it in a different light. And I am banking on the hope that this will happen.

Part of my hope comes from what I observe around me. I like to garden, and right now I have a spectacular view of my little backyard. I know I'm going to experience sadness when the great big antique tropical plant with huge pink blossoms "dies" for the season. But I have watched it each year since I planted it, and it has always come back to "life', and it is even more amazing each time. Not only this, but it multiplies. There might come a season when it doesn't do that. But I can't help believing that its essence will remain and nourish the beauty of the garden. It will not be forgotten by the earth. It will live in one way or another.

InPeace,
InLove

sure thang, jus playing with what we think death is thats all. yes the physical shall terminate, but we if anything at all [i.e. not just chemical robots] are not that physical, thus we do not die!

very nice analogy inlove.
perhaps that essence is eternal irrespective of earthly context - i like to think so, that there is a real eden out there somewhere.

interesting, and you could be right, humanity has come to understand most things so perhaps all will be ‘revealed’ at some point. i think that as far as revelations go, no matter how hard we try we may only know so much relative to what is to be known at this time in history, but i also thing very much more will be revealed and very soon!

death is a good thing. it is all around us. just like inlove explained with vegetation, plants, or trees. season after season they die but are resurrected. God shows us that there is nothing to fear, that He will resurrect us. if He resurrects plants imagine what He will do for us at the appointed time! but, the problem is that people fear dying. it is the most natural thing to do. to die. perhaps, people fear death because they are like lot's wife, they look back to what is left behind on this world. we shouldn't look back at all. to me there isn't anything for me here on this world. i don't care who you are, we are all looking for the moment to rest from our works. even if it means dying. God also shows us with His other works, for instance, day and night. why do we have to sleep? if you dwell on it enough, you realize that it isn't necessary, but God is giving us a taste of what it means to die. we die every moment, every hour, every day. just to be resurrected the next day. i don't know if i make sense, but this is so true to me. no fear, people, let them do there worst to us! God is on our side, for what can mortal man do, right? thanks for reading and God bless you all...

Hi Z.....I didn't comment on my views of what comes after, just the absolute fact that the skinny guy with the sythe is coming for every creature, whether we like it or not and no matter how much we have in the bank or how big our ego is.

I was really proud to get to 40 without a single wrinkle but 2 years on my face is starting to look like a roadmap. However, I love my roadmap face, it shows all the smiles and tears of my life, the billions of times I have frowned when I don't understand something and the look of wonder when I get to the top of a hill and see G-d's creation spread out before me. Life never ceases to amaze me.

Hi just the absolute fact that the skinny guy with the sythe is coming for every creature....

I think if you look in the highly esteemed philosophical treatise "Mort" by Terry Pratchet you will find that the skinny guy with the scythe does not do cats. Indeed they have their very own cat reaper.
Just thot I'd keep things accurate.

Think you will find it is the death of rats, the skinny guy always does cats himself coz he loves cats so much. Remember the drowning kittens in the barrel, he took them himself - if I remember correctly his eyes flashed red, which is never a good sign lol.

Lol... you are right :p I must be getting senile :)

After a Hectic we love to sleep, and we are happy to sleep, and never we asked question.

After a Hectic Life, this body is so tiered working for us, and now its wants some peace, now we are asking question. we are more sad to leave than grateful to this body that served proactively. "like a Professional".

Death is inevitable, a sensitive transition period which i believe is great chance to knock out of the orbit of duality, But can We?
Lets try.
Good luck all!

that is right, dot. people don't realize it but does an animal fear death? nope. we as man are the only ones that do. animals know about God more than us humans do. when have you ever heard and animal cry, "why do i have to die?" never, they just do because they know it is the most natural thing ever. so yeah, we are the only ones that question death. serves us right for eating of the fruit of knowledge!

Sorry Leo but I can't agree with this statement. Animals that are being chased by other animals or by man will show biological signs of fear. Cows that go to slaughter will smell the death of other cows and become aggitated. Animals fear death, as any creature does - that is why they struggle surely?

Agreed, MW. In fact, the fear of death is the primary survival instinct for most animals. The rabbit who is digging in my garden sure can smell it. And rightly so.

Agreed. (You should see my poor little dogs during a thunderstorm.)
