Blessing of the Sun

I was watching the news and I learned that this event happened yesterday. it was a beautiful site.. the sun hanging right on the horizon in Jerusalem. I have never heard of this before so I looked it up and I thought wow.. what an awesome tradition.

So my question is this.. how special is this even today modern society..? Do Jews all over the world recognize this or just traditionalists?
