Maryland. usa. FINALLY! LOL
I was watching a show this week about young people in the Amish community.

I had this view that the Amish were a very simple God fearing people, with a touch of mystery to them. In my niavety (sp?) I thought that this show would show me the "romantic" notion that I have seen in some movies!!

How wrong was I? LOL.

I sat in disbelief watching these young folks, drink, smoke, do drugs etc.
I understand that before they are members (when they reach adulthood), they have a chance to go out into the "english" world. Oh my!! When they cut loose, they really cut loose. !!!

It seems that even the Amish have the same problems that the rest of society has. I was so dissappointed, and I thought,"is nothing sacred!". I know this is just a reflection of what I "thought" Amish life was like.

Once again, just when I thought i knew something, I found out, I knew nothing at all!!

Any thoughts?

I can't recall the name for that. It is a short period though, a year maybe? And a huge percentage return, close to 90%. They don't all go off the deepend, but many experiment heavily. I think they've found it is better than always wondering how the other half lives,

Your romantic notions apply both ways. But with a good dose of hangovers, relationship issues, trouble with law and such....suddenly the mundane life looks better.

I actually don't have much issue with that. What seems funny to me is all of their justifications. Like they have all these concerns for their bodies, yet smoke. How using a light bulb is ok if it is powered by a generator. How the phonebooth at the street is acceptable. How electric tools are wrong, but use a generator to compress air, and use the air to power a tool....no problem. Those air sanders and saws are incredible...

The video is called The Devil's Playground. I rented it once, and it was interesting. The kids are raised very strictly and live a sheltered life, but as they become adults they are given a period of time to think it over and decide whether they want to join the kingdom of God or go out into the world. During this time they must go out and see what the outside world is like to make an informed decision.

hahaha... I saw a similar programme a few months ago, but they didn't take drugs, and stuff. They seemed so... fragile, and innocent that I couldn't imagine them coping in "the real world" at all. In the show I watched, they didn't get wasted- they shared a six pack of beer and painted their nails and it seemed all "thrilling" to them! Aw...

their pacifits brought about by the peasant wars in germany which they blame Luther and lutherans for .

What kinda neat from the lutheran perspective during this time their allowed out side of their mennonite community . many of the young seek out the sticktist of the lutheran church bodies the ones that did not apologize to them ..and they attend worship services . curiosity ?

yet this may be their only time they ever hear about the full and free salvation found only in Christ with out all the trappings of self righteousnes that goes on in their community's..
