It has struck me that many religious fundamentalist seem to be extremly bigoted.

Is their a link between belief and bigotry, is there something about faith that can cause individuals to be bigoted ?

Btw, the hadith you posted in the other thread contradicts the Quran.
I would've responded there, but apparently that thread is closed...
(surprise surprise )

lol pick and choose the hadiths you like lol, but i dont blame you i would, pm me if you want to discus that or start another thread.

Bigotry is more of a glorification of self (or a group) than a glorification of God, imo. Sure, some people practice the glorification of something other than God like a religion. (Usually referred to as idolatry.)

Why was the other thread closed? Is this the choice of the OP or a moderator?

you know, I was going to go for a pretty lame joke about my Italian friend who commented on the enormous size of the silver maple in my back yard, and to tell the truth it is soooo tempting.

But everyone here is too sophisticated for that, so I changed my mind.

Let's hear it. I'm sure this is the right thread for it. :D:D

I agree with SG..

I think pride is the worst sin of all. it was enough to bring about the fall of our adversary who was the head of all angels.

i think it brings about the fall of all of us.

We love ourselves dont we? that is why we are continually told to be humble because God hates pride.

GtG asks:

What is the link between religion and bigotry ?

I ask because many highly religious people such as fundamentalist Christians and all Muslims can tend to be extremely bigoted and intolerant.

So do you think that there is a relationship between the religion and bigotry? or faith and bigotry ?

and just to add, that I don't suffer from this problem at all  and hopefully I am not religious in any way :D

They are related in that together they make it easier to verify the fallen human condition in the "world" regardless of platitudes to the contrary. There is no choice in this. since we are as we are, everything is as it is. As such, the various exoteric expressions of religion cannot help but devolve to include bigotry.

Yup, we (Most) think we are right, and that others are horribly wrong. Therefore, those who are not like us, and who do not think, or act like us are somehow worthy of our bigotry. It is a matter of pride, and self righteousness I think. We get to where we somehow feel that we are better than others, and so the story goes ...

Well… yeah. Interestingly, One of the great living disproofs of books being useful as a way to a god assertion is that rarely can anyone agree on what is even being offered in those books, other than the utter fundamentals, like: "Yeah, there is a god". This is why you have numerous factions of religionists, all asserting either directly or indirectly that they are right, which means -- despite the claims of tolerance, the others must be wrong. If you are a Jew as opposed to a Christian, your very self-identification tells me that you are announcing Judaism to be right, and Christianity to be wrong-- unless you are purposely following a doctrine you believe is wrong (I suppose some people might do that, but whatever for?).

That, in and of itself, is only a mere pedestrian form of bigotry. Believing that you are right is not necessarily bigotry. Neither is expressing one’s convictions. In the West, we know that we are protected by law against violent reprisals for our beliefs. We will sometimes even welcome honest criticism. It often ends up strengthening our convictions, or enhancing them with different ones. But when you begin insisting that those who believe differently than you are inferior for no other reason than religious belief or worse, when those who believe differently than what is allowed by the State religion are ostracized (or worse), for embracing a different religion (or no religion), you have crossed the line from being a bigot and an unyielding dogmatist over to a dangerous supremacist.

Bigotry takes various forms, including racism and anti-Semiticism. Islamophobia is also a form of bigotry. I suppose religious intolerance would be another. And so is negative stereotyping of gays.

Can we get a little more specific?... All this vague, free-associative talk makes me seasick. :(

Such are the wages of “belief”. We humans are highly social and intelligent creatures who rely on the stability of a status-based hierarchical social structure. But we are also individuals. We are all as unique as our fingerprints or our genomes (and even twins will develop their own distinct character traits). While on one hand we need to know that there is a fixed set of norms and guidelines to live by, on the other hand we are naturally drawn to explore reality through the lens of our own particular outlook. In a decent and fair society, we can coexist and share our subjective observations, ideas, and innovations. In a secular society, we are free to pursue our passions, our predilections, and our strengths as individuals. We are free to become who we are.

Not all people see the merit in this way of life, though.

Historically, totalitarianism has worked to cohere large numbers of people to effect stability, however unpleasant, where otherwise there might have only been chaos. The last century has seen the rise and fall of many totalitarian / authoritarian regimes, and many yet remain. We've seen dystopian nightmares from Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Idi Amin. Today we have religious fascism in such places as Iran, various states in the Middle East and totalitarian regimes such as North Korea. The people with the misfortune to be born into the dehumanizing servitude of such nations have suffered more than I can rightly imagine. It's truly a shame, because I honestly feel that the all-encompassing and absolute ideology of totalitarianism is antithetical to human nature.

Interestingly, post-colonial totalitarianism has not uniformly "rubbed off" on Middle Easterners. In some ME countries, endorsement for democratic government is very high - like in the high 90s.

Actually it is just the opposite. Instead of a conception of God, the secular society you describes worships the "Great Beast" which is society itself. This assures that such a society will always alternate between compassion and cruelty. It is the way of the "Beast." it won't change its spots to justify platitudes to the contrary.

Admitting to the nature of social force, though a politically incorrect effort, is very revealing for those that wish to get beyond wishful thinking.

Dude, where DO you get these ideas?

I have to admit, they are entertaining.

You ought to be on TV.

You don't know what you lose by your attitude. If your mind could be open to reason out of the box you could really benefit from it. But instead you prefer blind ridicule. Many are like this and one reason why everything remains as it is.
