Hi, I'm so happy to have come across the Interfaith forum. I hope to learn a lot here from many interesting people.

I was raised in the Christian faith, primarily Evangelical, and for many years have tried to reconcile my own beliefs with what I was taught at home, at church, at the Christian school I attended briefly. Finally, after all these years, I've given myself permission to ask all the questions that in the past, would have resulted in admonishment or guilt, and here I am.

    Welcome :)

Keep asking the questions. But address them to God alone. 'There will be an answer, let it be.' IMO

I actually decided quite young not to blame my upbringing for anything negative that was going to happen to me from that point on. I saw it as weak to do so.

EDIT: God gave me goose sense along with everything else

It is quite clear. Our new participant expresses a past issue with their upbringing. Specifically the admonishment and guilt heaped by powers that be when questions arise. And immediately your response fed into that very issue. If this is not apparent to you, I am afraid I will not be able to explain it.

You mean I used the word GOD?
    Is that the difficulty?
Did I specify any faith or practice?
You need to explain, please ...

Hello! Glad to see an excited new member. I am very new myself here.

Feel free to ask anything at all. I've been able to say all sorts of stuff already in the brief time I've been here and the (very few active) people here are a bit more easy going than at some other forums so you'll probably enjoy it. How I cope with writing is I write first of all precisely how I enjoy it and I write for myself first as the first person who sees and likes it. If I wrote expecting pleasing responses I'd be needy and unsatisfied, so I make things to please and satisfy myself first and which I enjoy first of all as the first (and possibly only) reader of what I write or viewer of what I make. That way, no matter what reception you receive, you will at the very least be happy as your first reader making what you precisely enjoy, saying and expressing what exactly you want to in the way that makes you most happy or excited or relieved.

As far as I've gathered we have on this website a few active people:

Two Active Atheist/Agnostics: Cino who likes Buddhism and Wil who doesn't like the long posts I make, but don't let that stunt your writing if you want to go all out!

Two semi-active or slightly less active Muslims: Arif Ghamiq and Abdullah

One active Western Theist: RJM Corbet

Two people interested in Baha'i: One a serious practitioner, the other a serious learning.

One Budo Samurai I just saw called Thomas.

There are some friendly moderators and administrators floating around.

Then there is me! I can answer or try to answer literally any question you have at all about anything, especially religious type stuff regarding any religion from those you consider yourself already familiar with to those you may be curious about.

The things I might bring up may be really curious or uncommon to see typed about so maybe you will find something of interest in what I write or how I write about things if you manage to read any of it or care about the time and effort I put into writing more than a few sentences.

If you want a good healthy outlook, I reccomend Cino as having some good training in Buddhist style peaceful interaction with the world. If you want mental wrestling and thinking seriously or painfully about difficult things bluntly then there is me. Wil is good for having a similar background and likely having come across similar difficulties as you. The two muslims here don't seem to be proselytizing or anything (which is prohibited in the rules of the website also, to forcefully promote any particular religion or try to convince people to convert or whatever).

I actually came to this website because I was looking for a place to talk about Greek or polytheistic type stuff in a modern context, but instead got to writing more general stuff which reveals my own difficulties and complaints regarding the way things naturally seem to be.

I've yet to satisfy my interest in talking about mystical or spiritual things or to engage anyone regarding those but I don't really find anyone here to be too much into that sort of way of thinking (and most generally aren't anywhere). The people here seem much more down to earth and moderate in their thinking and behavior as far as I've seen.

Hope you have a good time! I also hope to see you make some threads or start asking some questions or saying pretty much everything you ever wanted to say or ask.

I can try to explain on behalf of wil in
case they don't want to clarify further or can't.

I think its because of reccomending that she invoke God that wil felt it was like a thing a religious person might say which gets a bad feeling inside a person who has had a difficult or traumatic experience with reccomendations that have to do with invoking God in any way.

This is an interfaith forum though, so the word God is likely to come up, but I don't think wil's problem was your using the word God, but suggesting to stellaluna that she invoke God and receive a certain response and the way that whole thing was worded as making her potentially feel guilty in case she is working on moving away from practices like invoking or calling upon God or praying, the way wil probably has.

Wil leaving or moving away from religion and his upbringing may have been for him a painful process that still makes them feel bad. They are also on a forum dealing with religions so its probably a big issue or subject for them and had influenced their feelings a lot even if they are more atheistic now.

Anyone who comes to join an interfaith forum or religious forum, religion is likely a big issue for them in some way even if they don't consider themselves religious anymore.

Religion one way or another is all I'm ever really interested in, so that is why I'm here as well.

I doubt stellaluna minded the God thing, it probably revealed more about you to her than it bothered her or anything.

I think its clear you were just trying to be both friendly and sagely and offer comfort even though for wil those sorts of words or suggestions which imply any belief or practice or prayer regarding any God may rub them the wrong way.

Maybe my entire explanation and analysis and guesswork is incorrect though, but that is what appeared to me to have happened.

What did it reveal about me?

Questioning fundamentalist Christianity means 'working on moving away from practices like invoking or calling upon God or praying'?

I'm going to need a bit more condensed thought and less rambling, if you wish to debate?

I also think there may be one more ingredient that could increase the aggression or hostility among humans, and that has to do with subconscious drives related to perception of sex and protectiveness regarding that, especially after there has been some kind of empathy or self-relation or self-connection. Even if it is not conscious, it may be that among men, men are at times more protective of resources of particular interest or value including people perceived as women. I am that way at least. Almost automatically I'm protective of all women and particularly young and attractive women, less so if they seem ugly, old, or crazy, and I know it sounds bad but I'm very frank with viewing every nuance of my deepest secret thoughts and reactions and try to remain sensitive to the realities inside me in order to understand the likely tendencies of humans in genersl even though they quite often may deny these natural in-built and perfectly sensible but callous sounding realities. I think its better to know than to act on them subconsciously and give other rationalizations. Or maybe its just me.

Ques that indicate some degree of youth, even if innaccurate, are the sneakers in the display picture, the typing style and enthusiasm, and the way the story was told and the content and stating a current lack of experience or knowledge with outside things. The name stellaluna implying a female as well.

Females and females within a certain age range tend to get treated differently by different people but generally get a certain set of reactions typically on forums.

Oh boy, I have so many stories I could tell of the things I've observed humans doing and how they change with different information, cues, implications haha. Humans really are just a very simple animal, but one whose speech we can understand in order to hear all their rationalizations and excuses and denials of their very animal-like basic drives and computers which are nothing to be ashamed of but definitely something to be aware of and restrain in many cases.

Restraining these things in some ways and sublimating or channeling these drives and tendencies is one of the main works of religions, that is what they do and attempt to do generally, creating control mechanisms and dam systems to tame human beings one way or another, a mechanism that humans come up with for their own survival and length of days.

Sure it's just you. How on earth did this paragraph develop from any debate upon the subject being discussed?

    This affects the debate, how?

This is completely debatable. On another thread. Complete nonsense, imo. But that's just me. Others will differ.

I'm not debating. I was trying to explain what I thought may have happened.
What it revealed about you is that you believe in God most likely, since why would a person who does not believe in God suggest invoking God?

That is what I meant that it reveals more about you and could be perceived as valuable information about you for them to calculate how to speak to you if they wish to. I was not debating or attempting to debate with you at all, but you may debate or suggest an alternative to what I suggested may be the reason behind what wil said and how wil seemed to react.

Wil gives the impression of having had a bad time with whatever religions they dealt with or were brought up around and seems to have moved away from belief in God and prayer, I am not suggesting that moving away from belief in God is how people question fundamentalism exclusively.

I don't wish to debate, since I'm not questioning what you said or opposing it, nor am I questioning or opposing what Wil said, but was simply trying to elaborate by stating what I think may be the issue which led to what you saw happen. I see no place to debate except if you disagree with my interpretation of events, which I'm totally fine with and am happy to hear your or any alternative interpretation which I think is acceptable as well because I don't care too much about the issue.

You asked wil to write more and explain, but in case they didn't feel like it, I offered an explanation as well. That is what happened, not an attempt to debate anything, but an attempt to satisfy your question.

Also, I don't consider my writing to appear rambling to me because I respect it, but I don't expect others to respect anything I write and can understand how what I write then is considered or called rambling by others. I think it comes down to interest and respect for the material or topics. One person's gold is another person's rubbish. For me, my writing is very clear and even stuff that seems off-topic secretly ties in or tries to inspire further development of primary ideas and all that mostly. Its not like I'm posting about groceries or something. Maybe my definition for rambling is a bit too extreme though.
